▶ At that time, as the number of disciples continued to grow, the Hellenists complained against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution.

그래서 열두 사도가 제자들의 공동체를 불러 모아 말하였다. “우리가 하느님의 말씀을 제쳐 놓고 식탁 봉사를 하는 것은 바람직하지 않습니다.

▶ So the Twelve called together the community of the disciples and said, "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God to serve at table.

그러니 형제 여러분, 여러분 가운데에서 평판이 좋고 성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람 일곱을 찾아내십시오. 그들에게 이 직무를 맡기고,

▶ Brothers, select from among you seven reputable men, filled with the Spirit and wisdom, whom we shall appoint to this task,

▶ The proposal was acceptable to the whole community, so they chose Stephen, a man filled with faith and the holy Spirit, also Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicholas of Antioch, a convert to Judaism.

▶ They presented these men to the apostles who prayed and laid hands on them.

|
하느님의 말씀은 더욱 자라나, 예루살렘 제자들의 수가 크게 늘어나고 사제들의 큰 무리도 믿음을 받아들였다.

▶ The word of God continued to spread, and the number of the disciples in Jerusalem increased greatly; even a large group of priests were becoming obedient to the faith.

은총과 능력이 충만한 스테파노는 백성 가운데에서 큰 이적과 표징들을 일으켰다.

▶ Now Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people.

|
그때에 이른바 해방민들과 키레네인들과 알렉산드리아인들과 킬리키아와 아시아 출신들의 회당에 속한 사람 몇이 나서서 스테파노와 논쟁을 벌였다.

▶ Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen,

그러나 그의 말에서 드러나는 지혜와 성령에 대항할 수가 없었다.

▶ but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.

▶ Then they instigated some men to say, "We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God."

또 백성과 원로들과 율법 학자들을 부추기고 나서, 느닷없이 그를 붙잡아 최고 의회로 끌고 갔다.

▶ They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin.

거기에서 거짓 증인들을 내세워 이런 말을 하게 하였다. “이 사람은 끊임없이 이 거룩한 곳과 율법을 거슬러 말합니다.

▶ They presented false witnesses who testified, "This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law.

|
사실 저희는 그 나자렛 사람 예수가 이곳을 허물고 또 모세가 우리에게 물려준 관습들을 뜯어고칠 것이라고, 이자가 말하는 것을 들었습니다.”

▶ For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us."

그러자 최고 의회에 앉아 있던 사람들이 모두 스테파노를 유심히 바라보았는데, 그의 얼굴은 천사의 얼굴처럼 보였다.

▶ All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel.
