들에서 보릿단을 묶는 이들을 감독하고 있던 그는 뜨거운 열기가 머리를 덮치는 바람에 자리에 누웠다가, 자기가 살던 성읍 배툴리아에서 죽었다. 그리하여 도탄과 발라몬 사이에 있는 들에 조상들과 함께 묻혔다.

▶ While he was in the field supervising those who bound the sheaves, he suffered sunstroke; and he died of this illness in Bethulia, his native city. He was buried with his forefathers in the field between Dothan and Balamon.

그리고 과부 생활을 하는 동안, 안식일 전날과 안식일, 그믐날과 초하룻날, 이스라엘 집안의 축제일과 경축일 말고는 하루도 빠짐없이 단식하였다.

유딧은 용모가 아름답고 모습이 무척 어여뻤다. 그의 남편 므나쎄가 금과 은, 남종과 여종, 가축과 밭을 남겼는데, 유딧은 그것들을 계속 소유하였다.

▶ She was beautifully formed and lovely to behold. Her husband, Manasseh, had left her gold and silver, servants and maids, livestock and fields, which she was maintaining.

유딧에 관하여 좋지 않은 말을 하는 자는 하나도 없었다. 그가 하느님을 크게 경외하는 사람이었기 때문이다.

▶ No one had a bad word to say about her, for she was a very God-fearing woman.

|
유딧은 백성이 물이 부족하여 용기를 잃고 수장에게 한 그 좋지 않은 말을 들었다. 그리고 우찌야가 닷새 뒤에 성읍을 아시리아인들에게 넘기겠다고 맹세하면서 백성에게 한 말도 다 들었다.

▶ When Judith, therefore, heard of the harsh words which the people, discouraged by their lack of water, had spoken against their ruler, and of all that Uzziah had said to them in reply, swearing that he would hand over the city to the Assyrians at the end of five days,

그리하여 유딧은 자기의 온 재산을 관리하는 시녀를 보내어, 성읍의 원로 우찌야와 카브리스와 카르미스를 모셔 오게 하였다.

▶ she sent the maid who was in charge of all her things to ask Uzziah, Chabris, and Charmis, the elders of the city, to visit her.

그들이 오자 유딧이 말하였다. “배툴리아 주민들의 수장님들, 제 말씀을 들어 보십시오. 여러분이 오늘 백성 앞에서 하신 말씀은 옳지 않습니다. 주님께서 닷새 안에 우리에게 도움을 베풀지 않으시면 이 성읍을 적군들에게 넘기시겠다고 여러분은 말씀하셨습니다. 그렇게 말씀하심으로써 여러분은 하느님과 여러분 사이에 맹세를 내거신 것입니다.

▶ When they came, she said to them: "Listen to me, you rulers of the people of Bethulia. What you said to the people today is not proper. When you promised to hand over the city to our enemies at the end of five days unless within that time the Lord comes to our aid, you interposed between God and yourselves this oath which you took.

도대체 여러분이 무엇이기에 이렇게 오늘 하느님을 시험하시고, 사람에 지나지 않으면서 어떻게 하느님의 자리에 서시는 것입니까?

▶ It is the Lord Almighty for whom you are laying down conditions; will you never understand anything?

|
여러분은 사람 마음의 깊은 곳을 찾아내지도 못하시고, 그 속생각들을 알아차리지도 못하십니다. 그러면서 어떻게 그 모든 것을 만드신 하느님을 세밀히 살펴보시고 그분의 생각을 알아내시며 그분의 계획을 헤아리실 수 있다는 말입니까? 안 됩니다, 형제 여러분. 주 우리 하느님을 노엽게 해 드리지 마십시오.

▶ You cannot plumb the depths of the human heart or grasp the workings of the human mind; how then can you fathom God, who has made all these things, discern his mind, and understand his plan? "No, my brothers, do not anger the Lord our God.

하느님께서는 닷새 안에 우리를 도우실 뜻이 없으시더라도, 당신께서 원하시는 때에 우리를 보호하실 수 있는 권능을, 또 적군들 앞에서 우리를 전멸시키실 수 있는 권능을 가지고 계십니다.

▶ For if he does not wish to come to our aid within the five days, he has it equally within his power to protect us at such time as he pleases, or to destroy us in the face of our enemies.

주 우리 하느님의 뜻을 담보로 잡지 마십시오. 하느님께서는 사람과 달리 협박할 수 있는 대상이 아니시고, 인간과 달리 부추길 수 있는 대상이 아니십니다.

▶ It is not for you to make the Lord our God give surety for his plans. "God is not man that he should be moved by threats, nor human, that he may be given an ultimatum.

그러니 하느님에게서 구원이 오기를 고대하면서, 우리를 도와주십사고 그분께 간청합시다. 당신 마음에 드시면 우리의 목소리를 들어 주실 것입니다.

▶ "So while we wait for the salvation that comes from him, let us call upon him to help us, and he will hear our cry if it is his good pleasure.

사실 우리 세대에는 우리의 어느 지파, 어느 가문에서도, 또 어느 씨족, 어느 성읍에서도, 이전처럼 손으로 만든 신들에게 경배하는 일이 일어난 적이 없고 오늘날에도 일어나지 않고 있습니다.

▶ For there has not risen among us in recent generations, nor does there exist today, any tribe, or clan, or town, or city of ours that worships gods made by hands, as happened in former days.

바로 그 일 때문에 우리 조상들은 살육과 약탈을 당하고, 우리의 적들 앞에서 무참히 파멸하였습니다.

▶ It was for such conduct that our forefathers were handed over to the sword and to pillage, and fell with great destruction before our enemies.

그렇지만 우리가 함락되는 날에는 온 유다도 넘어가고 우리의 성소도 약탈당할 것입니다. 그러면 하느님께서는 성소가 더럽혀진 그 잘못을 우리 자신의 피로 갚게 하실 것입니다.

▶ If we are taken, all Judea will fall, our sanctuary will be plundered, and God will make us pay for its profanation with our life's blood.

|
그분께서는 우리가 어디에서 종살이를 하든지, 그곳의 이민족들 사이에서 동포들이 학살당하고 온 나라가 유배로 끌려가고 상속 토지가 황폐해지는 일이 우리에게 들이닥치게 하실 것입니다. 그리하여 우리는 우리를 종으로 사들이는 자들 앞에서 조롱거리와 우셋거리가 될 것입니다.

▶ For the slaughter of our kinsmen, for the taking of exiles from the land, and for the devastation of our inheritance, he will lay the guilt on our heads. Wherever we shall be enslaved among the nations, we shall be a mockery and a reproach in the eyes of our masters.

그리고 우리는 종살이를 하면서 아무런 은혜도 입지 못할 것입니다. 주 우리 하느님께서는 그것을 치욕으로 돌려놓으실 것입니다.

▶ Our enslavement will not be turned to our benefit, but the Lord our God, will maintain it to our disgrace.

그러니 이제 형제 여러분, 우리가 동포들에게 모범을 보입시다. 그들의 목숨이 우리에게 달려 있고, 성소가, 하느님의 집과 제단이 우리에게 좌우되기 때문입니다.

▶ "Therefore, my brothers, let us set an example for our kinsmen. Their lives depend on us, and the defense of the sanctuary, the temple, and the altar rests with us.

모든 것이 그러하더라도 주 우리 하느님께 감사를 드립시다. 그분께서는 우리 조상들에게 하신 것처럼 지금 우리도 시험하고 계십니다.

▶ Besides all this, we should be grateful to the Lord our God, for putting us to the test, as he did our forefathers.

그때에 우찌야가 유딧에게 말하였다. “그대가 한 말은 진심에서 우러나온 것이니, 그대의 말을 반박할 자 아무도 없소.

▶ Then Uzziah said to her: "All that you have said was spoken with good sense, and no one can gainsay your words.
|

|
그대의 지혜가 오늘만 드러난 것이 아니오. 그대의 생애가 시작될 때부터 온 백성이 그대의 슬기를, 또 그대의 마음씨가 얼마나 고운지를 다 알아 왔소.

▶ Not today only is your wisdom made evident, but from your earliest years all the people have recognized your prudence, which corresponds to the worthy dispositions of your heart.

이 백성은 너무 목이 말라 우리가 자기들에게 약속한 것을 실행하도록, 또 우리가 어길 수 없는 맹세를 하도록 강요한 것이오.

▶ The people, however, were so tortured with thirst that they forced us to speak to them as we did, and to bind ourselves by an oath that we cannot break.

유딧이 그들에게 말하였다. “제 말씀을 들으십시오. 저는 대대로 우리 겨레의 자손들에게 남을 일을 하려고 합니다.

▶ Then Judith said to them: "Listen to me! I will do something that will go down from generation to generation among the descendants of our race.

|
오늘 밤 여러분은 성문 곁에 서 계십시오. 그러면 저는 시녀를 데리고 밖으로 나가겠습니다. 여러분이 이 성읍을 적군들에게 넘기겠다고 말씀하신 그 날짜 안에, 주님께서는 제 손을 통하여 이스라엘을 구하실 것입니다.

▶ Stand at the gate tonight to let me pass through with my maid; and within the days you have specified before you will surrender the city to our enemies, the Lord will rescue Israel by my hand.

|
그러나 제가 무슨 행동을 하는지 알아내려고 하지 마십시오. 제가 하려는 일이 끝날 때까지는 여러분에게 이야기하지 않겠습니다.”

▶ You must not inquire into what I am doing, for I will not tell you until my plan has been accomplished."

우찌야와 다른 수장들이 유딧에게 말하였다. “평안히 가시오. 주 하느님께서 우리 적군들에게 보복하시기 위하여 그대 앞에 서서 가시기를 비오.”

▶ Uzziah and the rulers said to her, "Go in peace, and may the Lord God go before you to take vengeance upon our enemies!"

그러고 나서 그들은 그 초막을 떠나 자기들의 자리로 돌아갔다.

▶ Then they withdrew from the tent and returned to their posts.
