▶ Shephatiah, son of Mattan, Gedaliah, son of Pashhur, Jucal, son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur, son of Malchiah, heard Jeremiah speaking these words to all the people:

“주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ‘이 도성에 머무는 자는 칼과 굶주림과 흑사병으로 죽겠지만, 칼데아인들에게 나가 항복하는 자는 죽지 않고 제 목숨을 전리품으로 얻어 살게 될 것이다.

▶ Thus says the LORD: He who remains in this city shall die by sword, or famine, or pestilence; but he who goes out to the Chaldeans shall live; his life shall be spared him as booty, and he shall live.

─ 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ─ 이 도성은 반드시 바빌론 임금의 군대에게 넘어가 점령당할 것이다.’”

▶ Thus says the LORD: This city shall certainly be handed over to the army of the king of Babylon; he shall capture it.

그러자 대신들이 임금에게 말하였다. “이런 자는 마땅히 사형을 받아야 합니다. 그가 이따위 말을 하여, 도성에 남은 군인들과 온 백성의 사기를 떨어뜨리고 있습니다. 사실 이자는 이 백성의 안녕이 아니라 오히려 재앙을 구하고 있습니다.”

▶ "This man ought to be put to death," the princes said to the king; "he demoralizes the soldiers who are left in this city, and all the people, by speaking such things to them; he is not interested in the welfare of our people, but in their ruin."

이에 치드키야 임금은 “자, 그의 목숨이 그대들의 손에 달려 있소. 이 임금은 그대들의 말에 어찌할 수가 없구려.” 하고 말하였다.

▶ King Zedekiah answered: "He is in your power"; for the king could do nothing with them.

그들은 예레미야를 붙잡아 경비대 울안에 있는 말키야 왕자의 저수 동굴에 집어넣었다. 그들은 예레미야를 밧줄로 묶어 저수 동굴에 내려 보냈는데, 그곳에는 물은 없고 진흙만 있어서 그는 진흙 속에 빠졌다.

▶ And so they took Jeremiah and threw him into the cistern of Prince Malchiah, which was in the quarters of the guard, letting him down with ropes. There was no water in the cistern, only mud, and Jeremiah sank into the mud.

▶ Now Ebed-melech, a Cushite, a courtier in the king's palace, heard that they had put Jeremiah into the cistern. The king happened just then to be at the Gate of Benjamin,

▶ and Ebed-melech went there from the palace and said to him,

“저의 주군이신 임금님, 저 사람들이 예레미야 예언자에게 한 일은 모두 악한 짓입니다. 그들이 그를 저수 동굴에 던져 넣었으니, 그는 거기에서 굶어 죽을 것입니다. 이제 도성에는 더 이상 빵이 없습니다.”

▶ "My lord king, these men have been at fault in all they have done to the prophet Jeremiah, casting him into the cistern. He will die of famine on the spot, for there is no more food in the city."

그러자 임금이 에티오피아 사람 에벳 멜렉에게 명령하였다. “여기 있는 사람들 가운데 서른 명을 데리고 가서, 예레미야 예언자가 죽기 전에 그를 저수 동굴에서 꺼내어라.”

▶ Then the king ordered Ebed-melech the Cushite to take three men along with him, and draw the prophet Jeremiah out of the cistern before he should die.

에벳 멜렉은 그 사람들을 데리고 왕궁의 의복 창고로 갔다. 거기에서 해진 옷과 누더기를 꺼내어 줄에 묶은 다음, 그것을 저수 동굴에 갇힌 예레미야에게 내려 보냈다.

▶ Ebed-melech took the men along with him, and went first to the linen closet in the palace, from which he took some old, tattered rags; these he sent down to Jeremiah in the cistern, with ropes.

▶ Then he said to Jeremiah, "Put the old, tattered rags between your armpits and the ropes." Jeremiah did so,

그들은 줄을 당겨 예레미야를 저수 동굴 밖으로 끌어 올렸다. 그 뒤 예레미야는 경비대 울안에 머물렀다.

▶ and they drew him up with the ropes out of the cistern. But Jeremiah remained in the quarters of the guard.

|
치드키야는 예레미야 예언자를 주님의 집 셋째 입구로 데려오게 하였다. 임금이 예레미야에게 말하였다. “내가 그대에게 한 가지 묻겠으니 무엇이든 나에게 숨기지 마시오.”

▶ Once King Zedekiah summoned the prophet Jeremiah to come to him at the third entrance to the house of the LORD. "I have a question to ask you," the king said to Jeremiah; "hide nothing from me." Jeremiah answered Zedekiah:

예레미야가 치드키야에게 대답하였다. “제가 임금님께 사실대로 아뢰면 임금님께서 반드시 저를 죽이실 것이고, 제가 임금님께 조언을 드린다 해도 임금님께서 제 말을 들으실 리가 없습니다.”

▶ If I tell you anything, you will have me killed, will you not? If I counsel you, you will not listen to me!

그러자 치드키야 임금은 예레미야에게 은밀히 이런 맹세를 하였다. “우리에게 목숨을 주신 주님께서 살아 계시는 한, 내가 그대를 죽이지도 않고 그대의 목숨을 노리는 자들 손에 넘기지도 않을 것이오.”

▶ But King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah secretly: "As the LORD lives who gave us the breath of life, I will not kill you; nor will I hand you over to these men who seek your life."

예레미야가 치드키야에게 말하였다. “만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 말씀하십니다. ‘네가 바빌론 임금의 대신들에게 나가 항복하기만 하면, 너의 목숨이 살아남고 이 도성이 불타지 않을 것이며, 너와 네 집안도 살아남게 될 것이다.

▶ Thereupon Jeremiah said to Zedekiah: Thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: If you surrender to the princes of Babylon's king, you shall save your life; this city shall not be destroyed with fire, and you and your family shall live.

그러나 네가 만일 바빌론 임금의 대신들에게 나가 항복하지 않으면, 이 도성이 칼데아인들에게 넘겨지고 그들은 이 도성을 불태울 것이며, 너는 그들의 손에서 빠져나가지 못하게 될 것이다.’”

▶ But if you do not surrender to the princes of Babylon's king, this city shall fall into the hands of the Chaldeans, who shall destroy it with fire, and you shall not escape their hands.

그러자 치드키야 임금이 예레미야에게 말했다. “나는 칼데아인들에게 넘어간 유다인들이 무섭소. 칼데아인들이 나를 그들의 손에 넘기면, 그들이 나를 학대할 것이오.”

▶ King Zedekiah, however, said to Jeremiah, "I am afraid of the men of Judah who have deserted to the Chaldeans; I may be handed over to them, and they will mistreat me."

예레미야가 말하였다. “칼데아인들이 넘기지 않을 것입니다. 부디 제가 임금님께 전해 드린 주님의 말씀을 들으십시오. 그러면 임금님께서는 일이 잘되고 목숨도 구하실 것입니다.

▶ You will not be handed over, Jeremiah answered. Please obey the voice of the LORD and do as I tell you; then it shall go well with you, and your life will be spared.

그러나 임금님께서 항복하기를 거절하실 경우에, 주님께서 저에게 보여 주신 사정은 이렇습니다.

▶ But if you refuse to surrender, this is what the LORD shows me:

유다 왕궁에 남은 여인들이 모두 바빌론 임금의 대신들에게 끌려가면서, 이렇게 말할 것입니다. ‘당신과 가까운 친구들이 당신을 속이고 멋대로 조종했지요. 그러고는 당신의 발이 진흙에 빠져 들자 그들은 등을 돌려 버렸지요.’

▶ All the women left in the house of Judah's king shall be brought out to the princes of Babylon's king, and they shall taunt you thus: "They betrayed you, outdid you, your good friends! Now that your feet are stuck in the mud, they slink away."

임금님의 모든 아내와 아들들은 칼데아인들에게 끌려갈 것이고, 임금님께서도 그들의 손에서 빠져나가지 못하실 것입니다. 임금님께서는 바빌론 임금에게 사로잡히시고 이 도성은 불탈 것입니다.”

▶ All your wives and sons shall be led forth to the Chaldeans, and you shall not escape their hands; you shall be handed over to the king of Babylon, and this city shall be destroyed with fire.

치드키야는 예레미야에게 당부하였다. “아무에게도 이 일을 알려서는 안 되오. 그랬다가는 그대가 죽게 될 것이오.

▶ Then Zedekiah said to Jeremiah, "Let no one know about this conversation, or you shall die.
|

|
내가 그대와 이야기했다는 소문을 대신들이 듣게 되면, 그들이 그대에게 찾아와 ‘그대가 임금님께 무슨 말을 했는지 하나도 숨기지 말고 우리에게 알려 주시오. 우리가 그대를 죽이지 않을 터이니, 임금님께서 그대에게 말씀하신 것이 무엇인지도 알려 주시오.’ 하고 말할 것이오.

▶ If the princes hear I spoke to you, if they come and ask you, 'Tell us what you said to the king; do not hide it from us, or we will kill you,' or, 'What did the king say to you?'

그러면 그대는, 요나탄의 집으로 돌아가면 죽게 되니 그곳으로 보내지 말아 달라고 임금님께 간청하였다고만 말하시오.”

▶ give them this answer: 'I petitioned the king not to send me back to Jonathan's house to die there.'"

|
과연 대신들이 모두 예레미야를 찾아와 그에게 물었으나, 예레미야는 임금이 분부한 말마디 그대로만 그들에게 대답하였다. 대신들은 이야기 내용을 듣지 못하였기 때문에, 예레미야에게 더 이상 캐묻지 않았다.

▶ When all the princes came to Jeremiah, they questioned him, and he answered them in the very words the king had commanded. They said no more to him, for nothing had been heard of the earlier conversation.
