이집트에 대하여. 이는 유다 임금 요시야의 아들 여호야킴 제사년에, 유프라테스 강 근처 카르크미스까지 갔다가 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르에게 패배한, 이집트 임금 파라오 느코의 군대를 두고 하신 말씀이다.

▶ Concerning Egypt. Against the army of Pharaoh Neco, king of Egypt, which was defeated at Carchemish on the Euphrates by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim, son of Josiah, king of Judah:

둥근 방패와 네모 방패로 무장하고 싸우러 나아가라.

말에 마구를 달고 군마에 올라타라. 투구를 쓰고 전열을 갖추며 창을 닦고 갑옷을 입어라.

어찌하여 그들이 놀라 뒷걸음치는 광경이 보이느냐? 그들의 용사들이 패배하여 허둥지둥 도망치는데 돌아보지도 못한다. 사방에 공포뿐이다. 주님의 말씀이다.

날쌘 자도 도망칠 수 없고 용사도 달아날 수 없다. 그들은 저 북녘 유프라테스 강 가에서 비틀거리다 쓰러진다.

▶ The swift cannot flee, nor the hero escape: There in the north, on the Euphrates' bank, they stumble and fall.

나일 강처럼 불어나고 강물처럼 물결이 넘쳐 나는 저것은 무엇인가?

바로 이집트가 나일 강처럼 불어나고 강물처럼 물결이 넘쳐 난다. 이집트가 말한다. “나는 불어나서 땅을 덮고 성읍과 그 주민들을 멸하리라.

▶ Egypt surges like the Nile, like rivers of billowing waters. "I will surge forward," he says, "and cover the earth, destroying the city and its people.

달려라, 말들아. 돌격하라, 병거들아. 진격하라, 용사들아. 방패를 든 에티오피아인들과 풋인들과 활을 들고 쏘아 대는 루드인들도 진격하여라.”

그날은 주 만군의 주님을 위한 날, 그분께서 당신 원수들에게 복수하시는 날이다. 칼이 그들을 삼켜 배부르고 그들의 피를 흠뻑 마시리라. 정녕 주 만군의 주님께서 희생 제사를 북녘 땅 유프라테스 강에서 지내신다.

▶ But this is the day of the Lord GOD of hosts, a day of vengeance, vengeance on his foes! The sword devours, is sated, drunk with their blood: for the Lord GOD of hosts holds a slaughter feast in the northland, on the Euphrates.

처녀 딸 이집트야 길앗으로 올라가 유향을 구해 오너라. 그러나 아무리 많은 약을 써 보아도 너의 병은 고칠 수 없으리라. 민족들이 너의 수치스러운 소문을 듣고

세상이 너의 울부짖음으로 가득 차리라. 용사가 용사와 부딪쳐 비틀거리다 둘 다 쓰러진다.

주님께서 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르가 이집트 땅을 치러 온다고, 예레미야 예언자에게 이렇게 일러 주셨다.

▶ The message which the LORD gave to the prophet Jeremiah concerning the advance of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, to attack the land of Egypt:

“너희는 이집트에 알려라. 믹돌에서 선포하고 멤피스와 타흐판헤스에서도 선포하여라. 너희는 이렇게 말하여라. ‘전열을 가다듬고 너의 각오를 다져라. 칼이 너의 주변을 삼키려 한다.’

▶ Announce it in Egypt, publish it in Migdol, proclaim it in Memphis and Tahpanhes! Say: Take your stand, prepare yourselves, the sword has already devoured your neighbors.

너의 군중이 비틀거리다 쓰러지면서 서로 말한다. ‘일어나 우리 백성에게 돌아가자. 무자비한 칼을 피하여 우리가 태어난 땅으로 돌아가자.’

딸 이집트의 주민들아 유배 짐을 꾸려라. 멤피스가 폐허가 되고 불에 타 인적 없는 곳이 될 것이다.

그곳에서는 용병들도 살진 송아지 같았으나 환난의 날과 징벌의 때가 그들에게 닥치면 그들도 견뎌 내지 못하고 등을 돌려 함께 달아나고 만다.

적군이 나무를 쓰러뜨리는 자들처럼 도끼를 들고 쳐들어오면 이집트는 뱀처럼 스치는 소리를 내며 도망간다.

▶ She sounds like a retreating reptile! Yes, they come in force; like woodchoppers, they attack her with axes.

그 숲이 빽빽이 들어찼다 하더라도 그들은 그것을 베어 넘긴다. 주님의 말씀이다. 과연 그들은 메뚜기보다 많아 헤아릴 수 없다.

▶ They cut down her forest, says the LORD, impenetrable though it be; More numerous than locusts, they cannot be counted.

딸 이집트가 수치를 당하고 북녘 백성의 손에 넘어간다.”

만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 말씀하신다. “내가 테베의 신 아몬과, 파라오와 이집트와 그 신들과 임금들과, 파라오와 그를 의지하는 자들을 벌하겠다.

▶ The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, has said: See! I will punish Amon of Thebes, and Egypt, her gods and her kings, Pharaoh, and those who trust in him.

내가 그들을 그들의 목숨을 노리는 자들의 손에, 곧 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르와 그 신하들의 손에 넘겨주겠다. 그러나 나중에 이집트는 예전처럼 사람이 살게 될 것이다. 주님의 말씀이다.

▶ I will hand them over to those who seek their lives, to Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, and his ministers. But later on Egypt shall be inhabited again, as in times past, says the LORD.

나의 종 야곱아, 두려워하지 마라. 이스라엘아, 무서워하지 마라. 내가 너를 먼 곳에서, 너의 후손을 포로살이하던 땅에서 구원해 내리라. 야곱이 돌아와 평안히 살며 아무런 위협도 받지 않고 편안히 살리라.

▶ But you, my servant Jacob, fear not; be not dismayed, O Israel. Behold, I will deliver you from the far-off land, your descendants, from their land of exile. Jacob shall again find rest, shall be tranquil and undisturbed.

나의 종 야곱아, 두려워하지 마라. 주님의 말씀이다. 내가 너와 함께 있다. 나는 너를 모든 민족들 사이로 쫓아 버렸지만 이제 정녕 그들을 멸망시키리라. 그러나 너만은 멸망시키지 않고 공정하게 징벌하리라. 나는 결코 너를 벌하지 않은 채 내버려 두지는 않으리라.”
