▶ Now about the service to the holy ones, it is superfluous for me to write to you,

사실 나는 여러분의 열의를 잘 알고 있습니다. 여러분의 그 열의를 두고 나는 마케도니아 사람들에게, 아카이아에서는 작년부터 준비를 갖추었다고 자랑합니다. 여러분의 그러한 열정이 많은 사람을 분발시켰습니다.

▶ for I know your eagerness, about which I boast of you to the Macedonians, that Achaia has been ready since last year; and your zeal has stirred up most of them.

그런데도 내가 이 형제들을 보내는 까닭은, 우리가 이 일로 여러분을 자랑한 것이 빈말이 되지 않게 하여, 내가 다른 이들에게 말한 대로 여러분이 실제로 준비를 갖추게 하려는 것입니다.

마케도니아 신자들이 나와 함께 그리로 가서 여러분이 준비를 갖추지 않은 것을 보게 되면, 이 사업과 관련하여 여러분은 말할 것도 없고 우리까지 수치를 당하지 않을까 염려됩니다.

▶ for fear that if any Macedonians come with me and find you not ready we might be put to shame (to say nothing of you) in this conviction.

그래서 나는 이 형제들에게 부탁하여, 먼저 여러분에게 가서 여러분이 이미 약속한 축복의 선물을 미리 갖추어 놓게 할 필요가 있다고 생각하였습니다. 이렇게 하여 그것을 억지 선물이 아니라 축복의 선물로 준비하게 하려는 것입니다.

▶ So I thought it necessary to encourage the brothers to go on ahead to you and arrange in advance for your promised gift, so that in this way it might be ready as a bountiful gift and not as an exaction.

요점은 이렇습니다. 적게 뿌리는 이는 적게 거두어들이고 많이 뿌리는 이는 많이 거두어들입니다.

저마다 마음에 작정한 대로 해야지, 마지못해 하거나 억지로 해서는 안 됩니다. 하느님께서는 기쁘게 주는 이를 사랑하십니다.

하느님께서는 여러분에게 모든 은총을 넘치게 주실 수 있습니다. 그리하여 여러분은 언제나 모든 면에서 모든 것을 넉넉히 가져 온갖 선행을 넘치도록 할 수 있게 됩니다.

▶ Moreover, God is able to make every grace abundant for you, so that in all things, always having all you need, you may have an abundance for every good work.

이는 성경에 기록된 그대로입니다. “그가 가난한 이들에게 아낌없이 내주니 그의 의로움이 영원히 존속하리라.”

씨 뿌리는 사람에게 씨앗과 먹을 양식을 마련해 주시는 분께서 여러분에게도 씨앗을 마련해 주실 뿐만 아니라 그것을 여러 곱절로 늘려 주시고, 또 여러분이 실천하는 의로움의 열매도 늘려 주실 것입니다.

여러분은 모든 면에서 부유해져 매우 후한 인심을 베풀게 되고, 우리를 통하여 그 인심은 하느님에 대한 감사를 불러일으킬 것입니다.

▶ You are being enriched in every way for all generosity, which through us produces thanksgiving to God,

이러한 구제 활동 노력은 성도들의 궁핍을 채워 줄 뿐만 아니라, 많은 사람이 하느님께 넘치도록 감사를 드리게 하기 때문입니다.

▶ for the administration of this public service is not only supplying the needs of the holy ones but is also overflowing in many acts of thanksgiving to God.

그들은 이 구제 활동을 높이 사서, 그리스도의 복음을 고백하는 여러분의 순종을 보고 또 자기들만이 아니라 다른 모든 사람과도 함께 나누는 여러분의 후한 인심을 보고 하느님을 찬양할 것입니다.

▶ Through the evidence of this service, you are glorifying God for your obedient confession of the gospel of Christ and the generosity of your contribution to them and to all others,

또한 여러분을 위하여 기도할 때, 여러분에게 내린 하느님의 넘치는 은총을 생각하며 여러분을 그리워할 것입니다.
