|
백성들은 모세가 산에서 오래도록 내려오지 않는 것을 보고, 아론에게 몰려와 말하였다. “일어나, 앞장서서 우리를 이끄실 신을 만들어 주십시오. 우리를 이집트에서 데리고 올라온 저 모세라는 사람은 어떻게 되었는지 모르겠습니다.”

▶ When the people became aware of Moses' delay in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, "Come, make us a god who will be our leader; as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him."

아론이 그들에게 “여러분의 아내와 아들딸들의 귀에 걸린 금 고리들을 빼서 나에게 가져오시오.” 하자,

▶ Aaron replied, "Have your wives and sons and daughters take off the golden earrings they are wearing, and bring them to me."

▶ So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron,

아론이 그 금을 그들 손에서 받아 거푸집에 부어 수송아지 상을 만들자, 사람들이 외쳤다. “이스라엘아, 이분이 너를 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라오신 너의 신이시다.”

▶ who accepted their offering, and fashioning this gold with a graving tool, made a molten calf. Then they cried out, "This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt."

아론은 이것을 보고 그 신상 앞에 제단을 쌓은 뒤, “내일은 주님을 위한 축제를 벌입시다.” 하고 선포하였다.

▶ On seeing this, Aaron built an altar before the calf and proclaimed, "Tomorrow is a feast of the LORD."

이튿날 그들은 일찍 일어나, 번제물을 올리고 친교 제물을 바쳤다. 그러고 나서 백성들은 앉아서 먹고 마시다가 일어나 흥청거리며 놀았다.

▶ Early the next day the people offered holocausts and brought peace offerings. Then they sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.

주님께서 모세에게 이르셨다. “어서 내려가거라. 네가 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라온 너의 백성이 타락하였다.

▶ With that, the LORD said to Moses, "Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved.
|

|
저들은 내가 명령한 길에서 빨리도 벗어나, 자기들을 위하여 수송아지 상을 부어 만들어 놓고서는, 그것에 절하고 제사 지내며, ‘이스라엘아, 이분이 너를 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라오신 너의 신이시다.’ 하고 말한다.”

▶ They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, 'This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!'

주님께서 다시 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “내가 이 백성을 보니, 참으로 목이 뻣뻣한 백성이다.

▶ I see how stiff-necked this people is," continued the LORD to Moses.
|
|

|
이제 너는 나를 말리지 마라. 그들에게 내 진노를 터뜨려 그들을 삼켜 버리게 하겠다. 그리고 너를 큰 민족으로 만들어 주겠다.”

▶ "Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation."

그러자 모세가 주 그의 하느님께 애원하였다. “주님, 어찌하여 당신께서는 큰 힘과 강한 손으로 이집트 땅에서 이끌어 내신 당신의 백성에게 진노를 터뜨리십니까?

▶ But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, "Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand?
|

어찌하여 이집트인들이, ‘그가 이스라엘 자손들을 해치려고 이끌어 내서는, 산에서 죽여 땅에 하나도 남지 않게 해 버렸구나.’ 하고 말하게 하시렵니까? 타오르는 진노를 푸시고 당신 백성에게 내리시려던 재앙을 거두어 주십시오.

▶ Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and exterminate them from the face of the earth'? Let your blazing wrath die down; relent in punishing your people.

당신 자신을 걸고, ‘너희 후손들을 하늘의 별처럼 많게 하고, 내가 약속한 이 땅을 모두 너희 후손들에게 주어, 상속 재산으로 길이 차지하게 하겠다.’ 하며 맹세하신 당신의 종 아브라함과 이사악과 이스라엘을 기억해 주십시오.”

▶ Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.'"

그러자 주님께서는 당신 백성에게 내리겠다고 하신 재앙을 거두셨다.

▶ So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people.

|
모세는 두 증언판을 손에 들고 돌아서서 산을 내려왔다. 그 판들은 양면에, 곧 앞뒤로 글이 쓰여 있었다.

▶ Moses then turned and came down the mountain with the two tablets of the commandments in his hands, tablets that were written on both sides, front and back;

▶ tablets that were made by God, having inscriptions on them that were engraved by God himself.

여호수아가 백성이 떠드는 소리를 듣고, “진영에서 전투 소리가 들립니다.” 하고 모세에게 말하였다.

|
▶ Now, when Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "That sounds like a battle in the camp."

그러자 모세가 말하였다. “승리의 노랫소리도 아니고 패전의 노랫소리도 아니다. 내가 듣기에는 그냥 노랫소리일 뿐이다.”

|
▶ But Moses answered, "It does not sound like cries of victory, nor does it sound like cries of defeat; the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry."

모세는 진영에 가까이 와 사람들이 춤추는 모습과 수송아지를 보자 화가 나서, 손에 들었던 돌 판들을 산 밑에 내던져 깨 버렸다.

▶ As he drew near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. With that, Moses' wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets down and broke them on the base of the mountain.

그는 그들이 만든 수송아지를 가져다 불에 태우고, 가루가 될 때까지 빻아 물에 뿌리고서는, 이스라엘 자손들에게 마시게 하였다.

▶ Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fire and then ground it down to powder, which he scattered on the water and made the Israelites drink.

모세가 아론에게 말하였다. “이 백성이 형님에게 어떻게 하였기에, 그들에게 이렇게 큰 죄악을 끌어들였습니까?”

▶ Moses asked Aaron, "What did this people ever do to you that you should lead them into so grave a sin?" Aaron replied, "Let not my lord be angry.

▶ They said to me, 'Make us a god to be our leader; as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.'

▶ So I told them, 'Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.' They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out."

|
모세는 백성이 제멋대로 하는 것을 보았다. 아론이 그들을 제멋대로 하게 내버려 두어, 적들에게 조롱거리가 되었던 것이다.

▶ When Moses realized that, to the scornful joy of their foes, Aaron had let the people run wild,

▶ he stood at the gate of the camp and cried, "Whoever is for the LORD, let him come to me!" All the Levites then rallied to him,

모세가 그들에게 말하였다. “주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ‘너희는 각자 허리에 칼을 차고, 진영의 이 대문에서 저 대문으로 오가면서, 저마다 자기 형제와 친구와 이웃을 죽여라.’”

▶ and he told them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Put your sword on your hip, every one of you! Now go up and down the camp, from gate to gate, and slay your own kinsmen, your friends and neighbors!"

레위의 자손들은 모세가 분부한 그대로 하였다. 그날 백성 가운데에서 삼천 명가량이나 쓰러졌다.

▶ The Levites carried out the command of Moses, and that day there fell about three thousand of the people.
|
|

|
모세가 말하였다. “오늘 너희는 저마다 자기 아들이나 형제에 대한 대가로 주님을 위한 직무를 맡았다. 그분께서 오늘 너희에게 복을 내리시기를 빈다.”

▶ Then Moses said, "Today you have been dedicated to the LORD, for you were against your own sons and kinsmen, to bring a blessing upon yourselves this day."

|
이튿날 모세가 백성에게 말하였다. “너희는 큰 죄를 지었다. 행여 너희의 죄를 갚을 수 있는지, 이제 내가 주님께 올라가 보겠다.”

▶ On the next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a grave sin. I will go up to the LORD, then; perhaps I may be able to make atonement for your sin."

모세가 주님께 돌아가서 아뢰었다. “아, 이 백성이 큰 죄를 지었습니다. 자신들을 위하여 금으로 신을 만들었습니다.

|
▶ So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sin in making a god of gold for themselves!
|
|

|
그러나 이제 그들의 죄를 부디 용서해 주시기 바랍니다. 그렇게 하시지 않으려거든, 당신께서 기록하신 책에서 제발 저를 지워 주십시오.”

|
|
▶ If you would only forgive their sin! If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written."

|
주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “나는 나에게 죄지은 자만 내 책에서 지운다.

▶ The LORD answered, "Him only who has sinned against me will I strike out of my book.
|

이제 너는 가서 내가 너에게 일러 준 곳으로 백성을 이끌어라. 보아라, 내 천사가 네 앞에 서서 나아갈 것이다. 그러나 내 징벌의 날에 나는 그들의 죄를 징벌하겠다.”

|
▶ Now, go and lead the people whither I have told you. My angel will go before you. When it is time for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin."

|
그 뒤 주님께서는 백성이 수송아지를 만든 일 때문에, 곧 아론이 만든 수송아지 때문에 백성에게 재앙을 내리셨다.

▶ Thus the LORD smote the people for having had Aaron make the calf for them.
