주님께서 모세에게 이르셨다. “너는 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라온 이 백성과 함께 이곳을 떠나, 내가 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱에게, ‘네 후손들에게 이것을 주겠다.’ 하며 맹세한 땅으로 올라가거라.

▶ The LORD told Moses, "You and the people whom you have brought up from the land of Egypt, are to go up from here to the land which I swore to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob I would give to their descendants.

▶ When the people heard this bad news, they went into mourning, and no one wore his ornaments.

주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “이스라엘 자손들에게 말하여라. ‘너희는 목이 뻣뻣한 백성이다. 내가 한순간이라도 너희와 함께 올라가다가는, 너희를 없애 버릴 수도 있다. 그러니 이제 너희는 패물을 몸에서 떼어 내어라. 그러면 내가 너희를 어떻게 할지 결정하겠다.’”

▶ The LORD said to Moses, "Tell the Israelites: You are a stiff-necked people. Were I to go up in your company even for a moment, I would exterminate you. Take off your ornaments, therefore; I will then see what I am to do with you."

그리하여 이스라엘 자손들은 호렙 산에서부터 패물을 벗어 버렸다.

모세는 천막을 챙겨 진영 밖으로 나가 진영에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에 그것을 치곤 하였다. 모세는 그것을 만남의 천막이라 불렀다. 주님을 찾을 일이 생기면, 누구든지 진영 밖에 있는 만남의 천막으로 갔다.

▶ The tent, which was called the meeting tent, Moses used to pitch at some distance away, outside the camp. Anyone who wished to consult the LORD would go to this meeting tent outside the camp.

모세가 천막으로 갈 때면, 온 백성은 일어나 저마다 자기 천막 어귀에 서서, 모세가 천막으로 들어갈 때까지 그 뒤를 지켜보았다.

▶ Whenever Moses went out to the tent, the people would all rise and stand at the entrance of their own tents, watching Moses until he entered the tent.

모세가 천막으로 들어가면, 구름 기둥이 내려와 천막 어귀에 머무르고, 주님께서 모세와 말씀을 나누셨다.

▶ As Moses entered the tent, the column of cloud would come down and stand at its entrance while the LORD spoke with Moses.

구름 기둥이 천막 어귀에 머무르는 것을 보면, 온 백성은 일어나 저마다 자기 천막 어귀에서 경배하였다.

▶ On seeing the column of cloud stand at the entrance of the tent, all the people would rise and worship at the entrance of their own tents.

|
주님께서는 마치 사람이 자기 친구에게 말하듯, 모세와 얼굴을 마주하여 말씀하시곤 하였다. 모세가 진영으로 돌아온 뒤에도, 그의 젊은 시종, 눈의 아들 여호수아는 천막 안을 떠나지 않았다.

▶ The LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as one man speaks to another. Moses would then return to the camp, but his young assistant, Joshua, son of Nun, would not move out of the tent.

모세가 주님께 아뢰었다. “보십시오, 당신께서는 저에게 ‘이 백성을 데리고 올라가거라.’ 하고 말씀하셨습니다. 그러나 당신께서는 저와 함께 누구를 보내실지 알려 주시지 않았습니다. 그러면서도 당신께서는 ‘나는 너를 이름까지도 잘 알뿐더러, 너는 내 눈에 든다.’고 하셨습니다.

▶ Moses said to the LORD, "You, indeed, are telling me to lead this people on; but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, 'You are my intimate friend,' and also, 'You have found favor with me.'

그러니 이제 제가 당신 눈에 든다면, 저에게 당신의 길을 가르쳐 주십시오. 그러면 제가 당신을 알고, 더욱 당신 눈에 들 수 있을 것입니다. 이 민족이 당신 백성이라는 것도 생각해 주십시오.”

▶ Now, if I have found favor with you, do let me know your ways so that, in knowing you, I may continue to find favor with you. Then, too, this nation is, after all, your own people."

주님께서 대답하셨다. “내가 몸소 함께 가면서 너에게 안식을 베풀겠다.”

모세가 주님께 아뢰었다. “당신께서 몸소 함께 가시지 않으려거든, 저희도 이곳을 떠나 올라가지 않게 해 주십시오.

▶ Moses replied, "If you are not going yourself, do not make us go up from here.

이제 저와 당신 백성이 당신 눈에 들었는지 무엇으로 알 수 있겠습니까? 저희와 함께 가시는 것이 아닙니까? 그래야만 저와 당신 백성이 땅 위에 있는 다른 모든 주민과 구분되는 것이 아닙니까?”

▶ For how can it be known that we, your people and I, have found favor with you, except by your going with us? Then we, your people and I, will be singled out from every other people on the earth."

주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. “네가 청한 이 일도 내가 해 주겠다. 네가 내 눈에 들고, 나는 너를 이름까지도 잘 알기 때문이다.”

▶ The LORD said to Moses, "This request, too, which you have just made, I will carry out, because you have found favor with me and you are my intimate friend."

모세가 아뢰었다. “당신의 영광을 보여 주십시오.”

▶ Then Moses said, "Do let me see your glory!"

그러자 주님께서 대답하셨다. “나는 나의 모든 선을 네 앞으로 지나가게 하고, 네 앞에서 ‘야훼’라는 이름을 선포하겠다. 나는 내가 자비를 베풀려는 이에게 자비를 베풀고, 동정을 베풀려는 이에게 동정을 베푼다.”

▶ He answered, "I will make all my beauty pass before you, and in your presence I will pronounce my name, 'LORD'; I who show favors to whom I will, I who grant mercy to whom I will.

그리고 다시 말씀하셨다. “그러나 내 얼굴을 보지는 못한다. 나를 본 사람은 아무도 살 수 없다.”

주님께서 말씀을 계속하셨다. “여기 내 곁에 자리가 있으니, 너는 이 바위에 서 있어라.

▶ Here," continued the LORD, "is a place near me where you shall station yourself on the rock.

|
내 영광이 지나가는 동안 내가 너를 이 바위 굴에 넣고, 내가 다 지나갈 때까지 너를 내 손바닥으로 덮어 주겠다.

▶ When my glory passes I will set you in the hollow of the rock and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

그런 다음 내 손바닥을 거두면, 네가 내 등을 볼 수 있을 것이다. 그러나 내 얼굴은 보이지 않을 것이다.”

▶ Then I will remove my hand, so that you may see my back; but my face is not to be seen."
