“주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 주시는 땅, 그곳에 사는 민족들을 주 너희 하느님께서 없애 버리시고, 너희가 그들을 쫓아내어 그 성읍과 집에서 살게 되면,

▶ "When the LORD, your God, removes the nations whose land he is giving you, and you have taken their place and are settled in their cities and houses,

주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 차지하라고 주시는 땅에 성읍 셋을 따로 떼어 놓아야 한다.

|
|
▶ you shall set apart three cities in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you to occupy.
|
|

|
그러고 나서 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 상속 재산으로 주시는 땅을 세 지역으로 나누고 길을 지정하여, 모든 살인자가 그곳으로 피신할 수 있게 하여라.

|
▶ You shall thereby divide into three regions the land which the LORD, your God, will give you as a heritage, and so arrange the routes that every homicide will be able to find a refuge.

살인자가 피신하여 살 수 있는 경우는 이러하다. 전에 미워한 일이 없는 이웃을 실수로 죽인 자나,

▶ "It is in the following case that a homicide may take refuge in such a place to save his life: when someone unwittingly kills his neighbor to whom he had previously borne no malice.
|

|
자기 이웃과 함께 나무를 베러 숲으로 가서, 나무를 찍으려고 손에 도끼를 잡고 휘두르다가 도끼날이 자루에서 빠져나가 이웃을 치는 바람에 그 이웃을 죽게 한 자는, 그 성읍들 가운데 한 곳으로 피신하면 살 수 있다.

▶ For example, if he goes with his neighbor to a forest to cut wood, and as he swings his ax to fell a tree, its head flies off the handle and hits his neighbor a mortal blow, he may take refuge in one of these cities to save his life.

|
살인자가 전에 그 이웃을 미워한 일이 없으므로 사형 판결을 받지 않아도 되는데, 피의 보복자가 흥분한 나머지 그 살인자를 뒤쫓아 가서, 그 성읍에 이르는 길이 먼 탓에 그를 따라잡아 때려죽이는 일이 있어서는 안 된다.

▶ Should the distance be too great, the avenger of blood may in the heat of his anger pursue the homicide and overtake him and strike him dead, even though he does not merit death since he had previously borne the slain man no malice.
|

그래서 내가 너희에게 ‘성읍 셋을 따로 떼어 놓아야 한다.’ 하고 명령한 것이다.

▶ That is why I order you to set apart three cities.
|

|
주 너희 하느님께서 너희 조상들에게 맹세하신 대로 너희 영토를 넓혀 주시고, 너희 조상들에게 주시겠다고 이르신 모든 땅을 너희에게 주시면,

▶ "But if the LORD, your God, enlarges your territory, as he swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land he promised your fathers he would give
|

|
곧 내가 오늘 너희에게 명령하는 모든 계명을 명심하여 실천하고 주 너희 하느님을 사랑하며 언제나 그분의 길을 따를 경우에 그렇게 해 주시면, 그때에는 이 성읍 셋에 또 다른 성읍 셋을 보태야 한다.

▶ in the event that you carefully observe all these commandments which I enjoin on you today, loving the LORD, your God, and ever walking in his ways: then add three cities to these three.

그리하여 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 상속 재산으로 주시는 너희 땅에서 무죄한 이의 피가 흐르는 일이 없게 해야 한다. 그렇지 않으면 그 피에 대한 책임이 너희에게 있다.

▶ Thus, in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you as a heritage, innocent blood will not be shed and you will not become guilty of bloodshed.

|
그러나 어떤 사람이 이웃을 미워하여, 숨어서 기다리다가 그를 덮쳐 때려 죽게 한 다음, 이 성읍들 가운데 한 곳으로 피신할 경우에는,

▶ "However, if someone lies in wait for his neighbor out of hatred for him, and rising up against him, strikes him mortally, and then takes refuge in one of these cities,
|

그가 살던 성읍의 원로들이 사람을 보내어 그곳에서 그를 잡아다가, 피의 보복자의 손에 넘겨 죽게 해야 한다.

|
|
|
▶ the elders of his own city shall send for him and have him taken from there, and shall hand him over to be slain by the avenger of blood.
|
|

|
너희는 그를 동정해서는 안 된다. 이렇게 이스라엘에서 무죄한 피를 흘리는 일을 없애 버려야 너희가 잘될 것이다.”

|
|
▶ Do not look on him with pity, but purge from Israel the stain of shedding innocent blood, that you may prosper.
|

“너희는 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 차지하라고 주시는 땅에서, 너희가 물려받을 너희 상속지에 선조들이 정해 놓은 이웃의 경계를 밀어내서는 안 된다.”

▶ You shall not move your neighbor's landmarks erected by your forefathers in the heritage you receive in the land which the LORD, your God, is giving you to occupy.

“어떤 사람이 저지르는 모든 잘못과 관련하여, 그의 어떤 죄나 잘못이든지, 증인 한 사람만으로는 그 증언이 성립되지 못하고, 증인 둘이나 셋의 증언이 있어야 유죄가 성립된다.

▶ "One witness alone shall not take the stand against a man in regard to any crime or any offense of which he may be guilty; a judicial fact shall be established only on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
|

|
악의가 있는 증인이 나서서 어떤 사람이 잘못하였다고 증언하면,

▶ "If an unjust witness takes the stand against a man to accuse him of a defection from the law,
|
|

|
그 사건의 두 당사자는 주님 앞에, 사제들과 그때에 직무를 맡은 판관들 앞에 서야 한다.

|
|
|
▶ the two parties in the dispute shall appear before the LORD in the presence of the priests or judges in office at that time;

|
판관들이 잘 심문한 결과, 그 증인이 거짓 증인이고 자기 동족에 대하여 거짓으로 증언한 것이 드러나면,

|
|
▶ and if after a thorough investigation the judges find that the witness is a false witness and has accused his kinsman falsely,

|
너희는 그가 자기 동족에게 하려고 작정하였던 것과 똑같이 그에게 해야 한다. 그래서 너희는 너희 가운데에서 악을 치워 버려야 한다.

|
▶ you shall do to him as he planned to do to his kinsman. Thus shall you purge the evil from your midst.
|

|
그러면 남은 사람들이 그것을 듣고 두려워하여, 너희 가운데에서 다시는 그런 악한 짓을 하지 않을 것이다.

|
|
▶ The rest, on hearing of it, shall fear, and never again do a thing so evil among you.
|

|
너희는 그를 동정해서는 안 된다. 목숨은 목숨으로, 눈은 눈으로, 이는 이로, 손은 손으로, 발은 발로 갚아야 한다.”

▶ Do not look on such a man with pity. Life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, and foot for foot!
