“너희가 적과 싸우러 나가서, 기마와 병거와 너희보다 수가 더 많은 군대를 보더라도, 그들을 두려워해서는 안 된다. 너희를 이집트 땅에서 데리고 올라오신 주 너희 하느님께서 너희와 함께 계시다.

▶ "When you go out to war against your enemies and you see horses and chariots and an army greater than your own, do not be afraid of them, for the LORD, your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, will be with you.

싸울 때가 다가오면 사제가 앞에 나서서 백성에게 말해야 한다.

▶ "When you are about to go into battle, the priest shall come forward and say to the soldiers:

|
그는 백성에게 이렇게 말해야 한다. ‘이스라엘아, 들어라. 너희가 오늘 적과 싸울 때가 다가왔다. 너희 마음을 약하게 가지지 말고 두려워하지 마라. 당황하지도 말고 그들 앞에서 떨지도 마라.

▶ 'Hear, O Israel! Today you are going into battle against your enemies. Be not weakhearted or afraid; be neither alarmed nor frightened by them.

주 너희 하느님은 너희를 위하여 적들과 싸우시러 너희와 함께 나아가셔서, 너희를 구원해 주시는 분이시다.’

|
▶ For it is the LORD, your God, who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies and give you victory.'

|
그다음에 군관들이 백성에게 이렇게 말해야 한다. ‘새 집을 짓고서 아직 봉헌하지 못한 사람이 있느냐? 그런 사람은 집으로 돌아가라. 그가 싸우다 죽어서, 다른 사람이 그 집을 봉헌하는 일이 있어서는 안 된다.

▶ "Then the officials shall say to the soldiers, 'Is there anyone who has built a new house and not yet had the housewarming? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another dedicate it.
|

|
또 포도밭을 가꾸어 놓고서 아직 그 열매를 맛보지 못한 사람이 있느냐? 그런 사람은 집으로 돌아가라. 그가 싸우다 죽어서, 다른 사람이 그 열매를 맛보는 일이 있어서는 안 된다.

▶ Is there anyone who has planted a vineyard and never yet enjoyed its fruits? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another enjoy its fruits in his stead.

또 여자와 약혼하고서 아직 그 여자를 맞아들이지 못한 사람이 있느냐? 그런 사람은 집으로 돌아가라. 그가 싸우다 죽어서, 다른 사람이 그 여자를 맞아들이는 일이 있어서는 안 된다.’

▶ Is there anyone who has betrothed a woman and not yet taken her as his wife? Let him return home, lest he die in battle and another take her to wife.'

|
군관들은 백성에게 다시 이렇게 말해야 한다. ‘겁이 많고 마음이 약한 사람이 있느냐? 그런 사람은 집으로 돌아가라. 그런 자가 형제들의 마음을 제 마음처럼 녹아 내리게 하는 일이 있어서는 안 된다.’

▶ In fine, the officials shall say to the soldiers, 'Is there anyone who is afraid and weakhearted? Let him return home, lest he make his fellows as fainthearted as himself.'

|
군관들이 백성에게 할 말을 마치면, 백성을 지휘할 장수들을 임명해야 한다.

▶ "When the officials have finished speaking to the soldiers, military officers shall be appointed over the army.
|

|
너희가 어떤 성읍을 치려고 그곳에 다가가면, 먼저 그 성읍에 화친을 제안해야 한다.

|
|
|
▶ "When you march up to attack a city, first offer it terms of peace.
|
|

|
그 성읍이 너희의 화친을 받아들여서 문을 열면, 그곳에 있는 백성은 모두 너희의 노역자가 되어 너희를 섬기게 해야 한다.

|
|
▶ If it agrees to your terms of peace and opens its gates to you, all the people to be found in it shall serve you in forced labor.

|
그러나 그 성읍이 너희와 화친하지 않고 싸우려 하면 그 성읍을 포위하여라.

|
|
|
|
▶ But if it refuses to make peace with you and instead offers you battle, lay siege to it,
|

|
그러면 주 너희 하느님께서 그 성읍을 너희 손에 넘겨주실 것이니, 너희는 그곳의 남자를 모두 칼로 쳐 죽여야 한다.

|
|
▶ and when the LORD, your God, delivers it into your hand, put every male in it to the sword;

|
그렇지만 여자들과 아이들과 가축과, 성읍 안에 있는 모든 것, 곧 모든 노획물은 전리품으로 삼아도 된다. 너희는 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 주시는 적의 노획물을 먹고 쓸 수 있다.

▶ but the women and children and livestock and all else in it that is worth plundering you may take as your booty, and you may use this plunder of your enemies which the LORD, your God, has given you.

|
저기에 있는 민족들의 성읍이 아니라, 너희에게서 아주 멀리 떨어져 있는 모든 성읍에 그렇게 해야 한다.

▶ "That is how you shall deal with any city at a considerable distance from you, which does not belong to the peoples of this land.
|

|
그러나 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 상속 재산으로 주시는 저 민족들의 성읍에서는, 숨쉬는 것은 하나도 살려 두어서는 안 된다.

|
|
|
▶ But in the cities of those nations which the LORD, your God, is giving you as your heritage, you shall not leave a single soul alive.
|

|
너희는 주 너희 하느님께서 너희에게 명령하신 대로, 히타이트족, 아모리족, 가나안족, 프리즈족, 히위족, 여부스족을 모조리 전멸시켜야 한다.

|
▶ You must doom them all - the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites - as the LORD, your God, has commanded you,

그래야 그들이 자기 신들에게 하는 온갖 역겨운 짓을 너희도 하라고 가르쳐서 너희가 주 너희 하느님께 죄를 짓게 되는 일이 없을 것이다.

|
▶ lest they teach you to make any such abominable offerings as they make to their gods, and you thus sin against the LORD, your God.
|

|
너희가 어떤 성읍을 점령하려고 싸움을 벌여 오랫동안 포위하고 있을 때, 그 성읍의 나무에 도끼를 휘둘러 나무를 쓰러뜨려서는 안 된다. 너희는 그 나무에서 열매를 따 먹을 수는 있지만 그것을 베어서는 안 된다. 들의 나무는 너희가 포위해야 할 사람이 아니지 않으냐?

▶ "When you are at war with a city and have to lay siege to it for a long time before you capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by putting an ax to them. You may eat their fruit, but you must not cut down the trees. After all, are the trees of the field men, that they should be included in your siege?

|
그렇지만 너희가 알기로 열매를 먹을 수 없는 나무는 쓰러뜨리고 베어서, 너희와 싸우는 성읍이 함락될 때까지 그 성읍을 포위하는 공격 보루를 만들어도 된다.”

▶ However, those trees which you know are not fruit trees you may destroy, cutting them down to build siegeworks with which to reduce the city that is resisting you.
