▶ This word came to Jeremiah for all the people of Judah who were living in Egypt, at Migdol, Tahpanhes, and Memphis, and in Upper Egypt:

▶ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: You have seen all the evil I brought on Jerusalem and the other cities of Judah. Today they are ruins and uninhabited,

▶ because of the evil they did to provoke me, going after strange gods, serving them and sacrificing to them, gods which neither they, nor you, nor your fathers knew.

▶ Though I kept sending to you all my servants the prophets, with the plea not to commit this horrible deed which I hate,

▶ they would not listen or accept the warning to turn away from the evil of sacrificing to strange gods.

▶ Therefore the fury of my anger poured forth in flame over the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem, so that they became the ruinous waste they are today.

이제 만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “어찌하여 너희는 스스로에게 큰 해를 끼쳐, 결국 너희 가운데 남자와 여자, 아이와 젖먹이까지 유다 한복판에서 쓰러져 너희 가운데 살아남은 자가 하나도 없게 하려느냐?

▶ Now thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why do you inflict so great an evil upon yourselves? Will you root out from Judah man and wife, child and nursling, and not leave yourselves even a remnant?

어찌하여 너희는 너희가 정착하러 들어간 이집트 땅에서 다른 신들에게 향을 피우면서, 너희 손으로 만든 것들로 나를 분노하게 하느냐? 결국 너희는 스스로를 멸망시키고, 세상 모든 민족들에게 저주와 수치의 대상이 될 셈이냐?

▶ Will you go on provoking me by the works of your hands, by sacrificing to strange gods here in the land of Egypt where you have come to live? Will you be rooted out and become a curse and a disgrace among all the nations of the earth?

▶ Have you forgotten the evil deeds which your fathers, and the kings of Judah and their wives, and you yourselves and your wives have done in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem?

▶ To this day they have not been crushed; they do not fear or follow the law and the statutes which I set before you and your fathers.

그러므로 만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “내가 너희에게 재앙을 내리기로 마음을 굳혔다. 온 유다를 멸망시키겠다.

▶ Hence, thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I have determined evil against you; and I will uproot all Judah.
|

|
이집트 땅에 들어가 정착하기로 마음을 굳힌 유다의 남은 자들을 붙들어, 이집트 땅에서 모두 전멸시키겠다. 그들은 칼에 맞아 쓰러지고, 낮은 자부터 높은 자에 이르기까지 굶주림으로 전멸할 것이다. 이렇게 그들은 칼과 굶주림으로 죽어, 악담과 공포와 저주와 수치의 대상이 될 것이다.

▶ I will take away the remnant of Judah who insisted on coming to dwell in Egypt, so that they shall be wholly destroyed. In the land of Egypt they shall fall by the sword or be consumed by hunger. High and low, they shall die by the sword, or by hunger, and become an example of malediction, a horror, a curse and a reproach.

내가 칼과 굶주림과 흑사병으로 예루살렘을 벌한 것처럼, 이집트 땅에 사는 자들도 그렇게 벌하겠다.

|
|
|
▶ Thus will I punish those who live in Egypt, just as I punished Jerusalem with sword, hunger, and pestilence. None of the remnant of Judah that have come to settle in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive.
|

이집트 땅에 들어와 사는 유다의 남은 자들 가운데 피신자나 생존자는 아무도 없을 것이다. 그들이 돌아가 살고 싶어 하던 유다 땅으로는 돌아갈 자가 아무도 없을 것이다. 정녕 몇 명의 피신자들을 빼놓고는 아무도 없을 것이다.”

▶ None shall return to the land of Judah, though they yearn to return and live there. Only scattered refugees shall return.
|

제 아내가 다른 신들에게 향을 피운다는 사실을 아는 모든 남자, 큰 무리를 지어 그곳에 서 있던 모든 여자, 그리고 이집트 땅 파트로스에 사는 모든 백성이 예레미야에게 대답하였다.

▶ From all the men who knew that their wives were burning incense to strange gods, from all the women who were present in the immense crowd, and from all the people who lived in Lower and Upper Egypt, Jeremiah received this answer:

“당신이 주님의 이름으로 우리에게 무슨 말을 하든 우리는 당신의 말을 듣지 않겠소.

▶ "We will not listen to what you say in the name of the LORD.
|

우리는 우리가 결정한 것을 모두 실천하겠소. 우리는 우리와 우리 조상들과 임금들과 대신들이, 유다 성읍들과 예루살렘 거리들에서 했던 대로, 하늘 여왕에게 향을 피우고 그 여신에게 술을 부어 바치겠소. 이제껏 우리는 양식도 넉넉하고 잘 지냈으며 재앙도 겪지 않았소.

▶ Rather will we continue doing what we had proposed; we will burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, as we and our fathers, our kings and princes have done in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem. Then we had enough food to eat and we were well off; we suffered no misfortune.

|
그런데 우리가 하늘 여왕에게 향을 피우는 일과 술을 부어 바치는 일을 그치자, 모든 것이 부족해지고 칼과 굶주림으로 망하게 된 것이오.”

▶ But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we are in need of everything and are being destroyed by the sword and by hunger.
|

여자들도 말하였다. “우리가 하늘 여왕에게 향을 피우고 그 여신에게 술을 부어 바칠 때에, 남편들 모르게 그 여신의 모습대로 과자를 만들고 술을 부어 바쳤겠습니까?”

▶ And when we burned incense to the queen of heaven and poured out libations to her, was it without our husbands' consent that we baked for her cakes in her image and poured out libations to her?"

예레미야는 남자 여자 할 것 없이 온 백성에게, 곧 그렇게 대답한 모든 백성에게 말하였다.

▶ To all the people, men and women, who gave him this answer, Jeremiah said:

“여러분과 여러분의 조상들과 임금들과 대신들과 나라 백성이, 유다의 성읍들과 예루살렘 거리들에서 향을 피운 짓을 주님께서 기억하시지 않을 리가 있겠소? 그런 일이 그분 마음속에 떠오르지 않을 리가 있겠소?

▶ Was it not this that the LORD remembered and brought to mind, that you burned incense in the cities of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem: you, your fathers, your kings and princes, and the people generally?

주님께서는 여러분의 악행과 여러분이 저지른 역겨운 행동을 더 이상 참으실 수 없었고, 그래서 여러분의 나라가 오늘처럼 인적 없는 황무지와 폐허가 되고 저주의 대상이 된 것이오.

▶ The LORD could no longer bear your evil deeds, the horrible things which you were doing; and so your land became a waste, a desert, a thing accursed and without inhabitants, as it is today.

여러분이 향을 피워 주님께 죄를 지었기 때문에, 또한 주님의 말씀을 듣지 않고 그분의 가르침과 계명과 권고에 따라 걷지 않았기 때문에, 오늘과 같은 이런 재앙이 여러분에게 닥친 것이오.”

▶ Because you burned incense and sinned against the LORD, not obeying the voice of the LORD, not living by his law, his statutes, and his decrees, this evil has befallen you at the present day.

예레미야는 온 백성과 모든 여자에게 말하였다. “이집트 땅에 있는 모든 유다인이여, 주님의 말씀을 들으시오.

▶ Jeremiah said further to all the people, including the women: Hear the word of the LORD, all you Judeans in the land of Egypt:

만군의 주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. ‘너희와 너희 아내들은 입으로 말한 것을 행동으로 다 이루었다. 너희는 하늘 여왕에게 향을 피우고 그 여신에게 술을 부어 바쳐, 너희가 한 서약을 반드시 실천하겠다고 하는구나. 너희 서약을 채울 테면 채워 보고, 너희 서약을 실천할 테면 실천해 보아라!’

▶ Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: You and your wives have stated your intentions, and kept them in fact: "We will continue to fulfill the vows we have made to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out libations to her." Very well! keep your vows, carry out your resolutions!

그러므로 이집트 땅에 사는 모든 유다인이여, 주님의 말씀을 들으시오. ‘내가 나의 위대한 이름을 걸고 맹세한다. ─ 주님께서 말씀하신다. ─ 온 이집트 땅에서 어떤 유다 사람이라도, ′주 하느님께서 살아 계시는 한!′이라고 하면서 입으로 내 이름을 더 이상 부르지 못하게 하겠다.

▶ But listen then to the word of the LORD, all you people of Judah who live in Egypt; I swear by my own great name, says the LORD, in the whole land of Egypt no man of Judah shall henceforth pronounce my name, saying, "As the Lord GOD lives."

이제 나는 그들에게 복이 아니라 재앙을 내리려고 지켜본다. 이집트 땅에 있는 모든 유다 사람들은, 칼과 굶주림으로 그들 가운데 마지막 사람까지 전멸할 것이다.

▶ I am watching over them to do evil, not good. All the men of Judah in Egypt shall perish by the sword or famine until they are utterly destroyed.

|
칼을 피하여 이집트 땅에서 유다 땅으로 돌아갈 사람들은, 그 수가 얼마 되지 않을 것이다. 그리하여 이집트 땅에 정착하러 들어온 유다의 남은 자들은 모두, 나와 그들 가운데 누구 말이 들어맞는지 알게 될 것이다.

▶ Those who escape the sword to return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah shall be few in number. The whole remnant of Judah who came to settle in Egypt shall know whose word stands, mine or theirs.

이것이 바로 너희에게 주는 표징이다. 주님의 말씀이다. 나는 이곳에서 너희를 벌하여, 너희에게 재앙을 내리겠다는 나의 말이 반드시 들어맞는다는 사실을 너희가 알게 하겠다.

▶ That you may know how surely my threats of punishment for you shall be fulfilled, this shall be a sign to you, says the LORD, that I will punish you in this place.

▶ Thus says the LORD: See! I will hand over Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, to his enemies, to those who seek his life, just as I handed over Zedekiah, king of Judah, to his enemy and mortal foe, Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon.
