이스라엘이 아이였을 때에 나는 그를 사랑하여 나의 그 아들을 이집트에서 불러내었다.

▶ When Israel was a child I loved him, out of Egypt I called my son.

그러나 내가 부를수록 그들은 나에게서 멀어져 갔다. 그들은 바알들에게 희생 제물을 바치고 우상들에게 향을 피워 올렸다.

▶ The more I called them, the farther they went from me, Sacrificing to the Baals and burning incense to idols.

내가 에프라임에게 걸음마를 가르쳐 주고 내 팔로 안아 주었지만 그들은 내가 자기들의 병을 고쳐 준 줄을 알지 못하였다.

▶ Yet it was I who taught Ephraim to walk, who took them in my arms;

나는 인정의 끈으로, 사랑의 줄로 그들을 끌어당겼으며 젖먹이처럼 들어 올려 볼을 비비고 몸을 굽혀 먹여 주었다.

▶ I drew them with human cords, with bands of love; I fostered them like one who raises an infant to his cheeks; Yet, though I stooped to feed my child, they did not know that I was their healer.

그러나 그들은 이집트 땅으로 돌아가고 아시리아가 바로 그들의 임금이 되리니 그들이 나에게 돌아오기를 마다하였기 때문이다.

▶ He shall return to the land of Egypt, and Assyria shall be his king;

그들의 계략 탓으로 칼이 그 성읍들에 들이닥쳐 성문 빗장들을 부수고 삼켜 버리리라.

▶ The sword shall begin with his cities and end by consuming his solitudes. Because they refused to repent, their own counsels shall devour them.

|
내 백성은 나를 배반하려고만 한다. 그들이 위를 향해 부르짖어도 누구 하나 일으켜 세워 주지 않으리라.

▶ His people are in suspense about returning to him; and God, though in unison they cry out to him, shall not raise them up.

에프라임아, 내가 어찌 너를 내버리겠느냐? 이스라엘아, 내가 어찌 너를 저버리겠느냐? 내가 어찌 너를 아드마처럼 내버리겠느냐? 내가 어찌 너를 츠보임처럼 만들겠느냐? 내 마음이 미어지고 연민이 북받쳐 오른다.

▶ How could I give you up, O Ephraim, or deliver you up, O Israel? How could I treat you as Admah, or make you like Zeboiim? My heart is overwhelmed, my pity is stirred.

|
나는 타오르는 내 분노대로 행동하지 않고 에프라임을 다시는 멸망시키지 않으리라. 나는 사람이 아니라 하느님이다. 나는 네 가운데에 있는 ‘거룩한 이’ 분노를 터뜨리며 너에게 다가가지 않으리라.

▶ I will not give vent to my blazing anger, I will not destroy Ephraim again; For I am God and not man, the Holy One present among you; I will not let the flames consume you.

그들이 주님을 따라오리라. 주님이 사자처럼 포효하리니 그가 포효하면 그의 자녀들이 떨면서 서쪽에서 오리라.

▶ They shall follow the LORD, who roars like a lion; When he roars, his sons shall come frightened from the west,

그들은 떨면서 이집트에서 새처럼 오고 아시리아 땅에서 비둘기처럼 오리라. 그리고 나는 그들을 다시 제집에 살게 하리라. 주님의 말씀이다.

▶ Out of Egypt they shall come trembling, like sparrows, from the land of Assyria, like doves; And I will resettle them in their homes, says the LORD.
