가자 사람들은 “삼손이 여기에 왔다.”는 소식을 듣고 그곳을 에워싼 다음, 밤새도록 성문에 숨어 그를 기다렸다. 그들은 “내일 동이 틀 때까지 기다렸다가 그를 죽이자.” 하면서 밤새도록 가만히 있었다.

▶ Informed that Samson had come there, the men of Gaza surrounded him with an ambush at the city gate all night long. And all the night they waited, saying, "Tomorrow morning we will kill him."

삼손은 한밤중까지 자리에 누워 있었다. 그러다가 그는 한밤중에 일어나 성문의 두 문짝과 양쪽 문설주를 잡고 빗장째 뽑아 어깨에 메고서는, 헤브론 맞은쪽 산꼭대기로 올라가 버렸다.

▶ Samson rested there until midnight. Then he rose, seized the doors of the city gate and the two gateposts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He hoisted them on his shoulders and carried them to the top of the ridge opposite Hebron.

▶ After that he fell in love with a woman in the Wadi Sorek whose name was Delilah.

필리스티아 제후들이 그 여자에게 올라가서 말하였다. “삼손을 구슬러 그의 그 큰 힘이 어디에서 나오는지, 우리가 어떻게 하면 그를 잡아 묶어서 꼼짝 못 하게 할 수 있는지 알아내어라. 그러면 우리가 저마다 너에게 은 천백 세켈씩 주겠다.”

▶ The lords of the Philistines came to her and said, "Beguile him and find out the secret of his great strength, and how we may overcome and bind him so as to keep him helpless. We will each give you eleven hundred shekels of silver."

그리하여 들릴라가 삼손에게 물었다. “당신의 그 큰 힘이 어디에서 나오는지, 어떻게 하면 당신을 묶어서 꼼짝 못 하게 할 수 있는지 말해 주세요.”

▶ So Delilah said to Samson, "Tell me the secret of your great strength and how you may be bound so as to be kept helpless."

삼손이 그 여자에게 대답하였다. “마르지 않은 싱싱한 줄 일곱 개로 묶으면, 내가 약해져서 여느 사람처럼 된다오.”

▶ "If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings which have not dried," Samson answered her, "I shall be as weak as any other man."

그래서 필리스티아 제후들이 마르지 않은 싱싱한 줄 일곱 개를 올려 보내자, 들릴라는 그것으로 삼손을 묶었다.

▶ So the lords of the Philistines brought her seven fresh bowstrings which had not dried, and she bound him with them.

복병을 미리 자기 방에 숨겨 둔 들릴라가 그에게 말하였다. “삼손, 필리스티아인들이 당신을 잡으러 와요.” 그러자 삼손은 불에 닿은 삼 오라기를 끊듯이 그 줄들을 끊어 버렸다. 그리하여 그 힘의 비밀이 알려지지 않았다.

▶ She had men lying in wait in the chamber and so she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" But he snapped the strings as a thread of tow is severed by a whiff of flame; and the secret of his strength remained unknown.

들릴라가 삼손에게 말하였다. “이봐요, 당신은 나를 놀렸어요. 나한테 거짓말을 했어요. 무엇으로 묶으면 되는지 이제 말해 주세요.”

▶ Delilah said to Samson, "You have mocked me and told me lies. Now tell me how you may be bound."

삼손이 그 여자에게 대답하였다. “한 번도 쓰지 않은 새 밧줄로 묶기만 하면, 내가 약해져서 여느 사람처럼 된다오.”

▶ "If they bind me tight with new ropes, with which no work has been done," he answered her, "I shall be as weak as any other man."

그래서 들릴라는 새 밧줄을 가져다가 삼손을 묶고 나서 말하였다. “삼손, 필리스티아인들이 당신을 잡으러 와요.” 방에는 미리 복병을 숨겨 두고 있었다. 그러자 삼손은 제 팔을 묶은 밧줄을 실처럼 끊어 버렸다.

▶ So Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them. Then she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" For there were men lying in wait in the chamber. But he snapped them off his arms like thread.

들릴라가 삼손에게 말하였다. “당신은 여전히 나를 놀리고 나한테 거짓말을 하는군요. 무엇으로 묶으면 되는지 말해 주세요.” 삼손이 그 여자에게 대답하였다. “내 머리털 일곱 가닥을 베틀 날실로 땋아 말뚝에 매고 벽에 박아 놓으면, 내가 약해져서 여느 사람처럼 된다오.”

▶ Delilah said to Samson again, "Up to now you have mocked me and told me lies. Tell me how you may be bound." He said to her, "If you weave my seven locks of hair into the web and fasten them with the pin, I shall be as weak as any other man."

그래서 들릴라는 그를 잠들게 하고 나서, 그의 머리털 일곱 가닥을 베틀 날실로 땋아 말뚝으로 박아 놓은 다음 말하였다. “삼손, 필리스티아인들이 당신을 잡으러 와요.” 그러자 삼손은 잠에서 깨어나 말뚝과 날실을 뽑아 버렸다.

▶ So while he slept, Delilah wove his seven locks of hair into the web, and fastened them in with the pin. Then she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" Awakening from his sleep, he pulled out both the weaver's pin and the web.

들릴라가 또 삼손에게 말하였다. “마음은 내 곁에 있지도 않으면서, 당신은 어떻게 나를 사랑한다고 말할 수 있어요? 이렇게 나를 세 번이나 놀리면서, 당신의 그 큰 힘이 어디에서 나오는지 말해 주지 않는군요.”

▶ Then she said to him, "How can you say that you love me when you do not confide in me? Three times already you have mocked me, and not told me the secret of your great strength!"

이런 말로 들릴라가 날마다 들볶고 조르는 바람에, 삼손은 지겨워서 죽을 지경이 되었다.

▶ She importuned him continually and vexed him with her complaints till he was deathly weary of them.

그래서 삼손은 자기 속을 다 털어놓고 말았다. “내 머리는 면도칼을 대어 본 적이 없소. 나는 모태에서부터 하느님께 바쳐진 나지르인이기 때문이오. 내 머리털을 깎아 버리면 내 힘이 빠져나가 버릴 것이오. 그러면 내가 약해져서 다른 사람처럼 된다오.”

▶ So he took her completely into his confidence and told her, "No razor has touched my head, for I have been consecrated to God from my mother's womb. If I am shaved, my strength will leave me, and I shall be as weak as any other man."

삼손이 자기 속을 다 털어놓은 것을 본 들릴라는, 필리스티아 제후들을 불러 모으려고 전갈을 보냈다. “이번에는 직접 올라오십시오. 그가 자기 속을 다 털어놓았습니다.” 그러자 필리스티아 제후들이 그 여자에게 올라왔다. 저마다 손에 돈을 들고 올라왔다.

▶ When Delilah saw that he had taken her completely into his confidence, she summoned the lords of the Philistines, saying, "Come up this time, for he has opened his heart to me." So the lords of the Philistines came and brought up the money with them.

들릴라는 삼손을 무릎에 뉘어 잠들게 하고 나서, 사람 하나를 불러 일곱 가닥으로 땋은 그의 머리털을 깎게 하였다. 그러자 삼손은 허약해지기 시작하더니, 힘이 빠져나가 버렸다.

▶ She had him sleep on her lap, and called for a man who shaved off his seven locks of hair. Then she began to mistreat him, for his strength had left him.

들릴라가 말하였다. “삼손, 필리스티아인들이 당신을 잡으러 와요.” 삼손은 잠에서 깨어나, ‘지난번처럼 밖으로 나가 몸을 빼낼 수 있겠지.’ 하고 생각하였다. 그는 주님께서 자기를 떠나셨다는 것을 알지 못하였다.

▶ When she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!", and he woke from his sleep, he thought he could make good his escape as he had done time and again, for he did not realize that the LORD had left him.

|
필리스티아인들은 그를 붙잡아 그의 눈을 후벼 낸 다음, 가자로 끌고 내려가서 청동 사슬로 묶어, 감옥에서 연자매를 돌리게 하였다.

▶ But the Philistines seized him and gouged out his eyes. Then they brought him down to Gaza and bound him with bronze fetters, and he was put to grinding in the prison.

그런데 그의 깎인 머리카락이 다시 자라기 시작하였다.

필리스티아 제후들이 자기들의 신 다곤에게 큰 제물을 바치면서 기쁘게 지내려고 한데 모였다. 그들은 이렇게 말하였다. “우리의 원수 삼손을 우리의 신께서 우리 손에 넘겨주셨네.”

▶ The lords of the Philistines assembled to offer a great sacrifice to their god Dagon and to make merry. They said, "Our god has delivered into our power Samson our enemy."

백성도 그를 보고서는 자기들의 신을 찬양하며 말하였다. “우리 땅을 망쳐 놓은 자 우리를 많이도 살해한 자 우리의 원수를 우리의 신께서 우리 손에 넘겨주셨네.”

▶ When the people saw him, they praised their god. For they said, "Our god has delivered into our power our enemy, the ravager of our land, the one who has multiplied our slain." Then they stationed him between the columns.

그들은 마음이 흥겨워지자, “삼손을 불러내어 재주를 부리게 합시다.” 하였다. 그래서 사람들이 그를 감옥에서 불러내어 자기들 앞에서 재간을 부리게 하였다. 그러고 나서 그를 기둥 사이에 세워 놓았다.

▶ When their spirits were high, they said, "Call Samson that he may amuse us." So they called Samson from the prison, and he played the buffoon before them.

그러자 삼손은 자기 손을 붙들어 주는 소년에게 부탁하였다. “이 집을 버티고 있는 기둥들을 만질 수 있는 곳으로 나를 데려다 다오. 거기에 좀 기대야겠다.”

▶ Samson said to the attendant who was holding his hand, "Put me where I may touch the columns that support the temple and may rest against them."

|
그때에 그 집은 남자와 여자로 가득 찼는데, 필리스티아 제후들도 모두 거기에 있었다. 옥상에도 삼손이 재주를 부릴 때에 구경하던 남자와 여자가 삼천 명쯤 있었다.

▶ The temple was full of men and women: all the lords of the Philistines were there, and from the roof about three thousand men and women looked on as Samson provided amusement.

그때에 삼손이 주님께 부르짖었다. “주 하느님, 저를 기억해 주십시오. 이번 한 번만 저에게 다시 힘을 주십시오. 하느님, 이 한 번으로 필리스티아인들에게 저의 두 눈에 대한 복수를 하게 해 주십시오.”

▶ Samson cried out to the LORD and said, "O Lord GOD, remember me! Strengthen me, O God, this last time that for my two eyes I may avenge myself once and for all on the Philistines."

|
그런 다음에 삼손은 그 집을 버티고 있는 중앙의 두 기둥을 더듬어 찾아서, 기둥 하나에는 오른손을, 다른 하나에는 왼손을 대었다.

▶ Samson grasped the two middle columns on which the temple rested and braced himself against them, one at his right hand, the other at his left.

|
그리고 삼손이 “필리스티아인들과 함께 죽게 해 주십시오.” 하면서 힘을 다하여 밀어내니, 그 집이 그 안에 있는 제후들과 온 백성 위로 무너져 내렸다. 그리하여 삼손이 죽으면서 죽인 사람이, 그가 사는 동안에 죽인 사람보다 더 많았다.

▶ And Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" He pushed hard, and the temple fell upon the lords and all the people who were in it. Those he killed at his death were more than those he had killed during his lifetime.

그의 형제들과 그의 아버지 집안이 모두 내려와 그의 주검을 들고 올라가서, 초르아와 에스타올 사이에 있는 그의 아버지 마노아의 무덤에 장사 지냈다. 그는 스무 해 동안 이스라엘의 판관으로 일하였다.

▶ All his family and kinsmen went down and bore him up for burial in the grave of his father Manoah between Zorah and Eshtaol. He had judged Israel for twenty years.
