their heritage by lot, in accordance with the instructions the LORD had given through Moses concerning the remaining nine and a half tribes.

For to two and a half tribes Moses had already given a heritage beyond the Jordan; and though the Levites were given no heritage among the tribes,

the descendants of Joseph formed two tribes, Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites themselves received no share of the land except cities to live in, with their pasture lands for the cattle and flocks.

Thus, in apportioning the land, did the Israelites carry out the instructions of the LORD to Moses.

When the Judahites came up to Joshua in Gilgal, the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, said to him: "You know what the LORD said to the man of God, Moses, about you and me in Kadesh-barnea.

I was forty years old when the servant of the LORD, Moses, sent me from Kadesh-barnea to reconnoiter the land; and I brought back to him a conscientious report.

My fellow scouts who went up with me discouraged the people, but I was completely loyal to the LORD, my God.

On that occasion Moses swore this oath, 'The land where you have set foot shall become your heritage and that of your descendants forever, because you have been completely loyal to the LORD, my God.'

▶ 그래서 그날 모세께서는, ‘네가 주 나의 하느님을 온전히 따랐으니, 네 발로 밟은 땅은 영원히 너와 네 자손들의 상속 재산이 될 것이다.’ 하고 맹세하셨습니다.

Now, as he promised, the LORD has preserved me while Israel was journeying through the desert, for the forty-five years since the LORD spoke thus to Moses; and although I am now eighty-five years old,

▶ 이제 보십시오, 주님께서는 친히 이르신 대로 저를 살아남게 하셨습니다. 이스라엘이 광야를 걸을 때에 주님께서 모세께 이 말씀을 이르신 때부터 마흔다섯 해 동안 저를 살아남게 하신 것입니다. 보십시오, 이제 저는 여든다섯 살이 되었습니다.

I am still as strong today as I was the day Moses sent me forth, with no less vigor whether for war or for ordinary tasks.

▶ 모세께서 저를 보내시던 그날처럼 오늘도 저는 여전히 건강합니다. 전쟁하는 데에든 드나드는 데에든, 제 힘은 그때나 지금이나 마찬가지입니다.

Give me, therefore, this mountain region which the LORD promised me that day, as you yourself heard. True, the Anakim are there, with large fortified cities, but if the LORD is with me I shall be able to drive them out, as the LORD promised."

▶ 그러니 이제 주님께서 그날 이르신 저 산악 지방을 저에게 주십시오. 그때 들으신 대로 아낙인들이 저곳에 살고 있고, 성읍들은 클뿐더러 요새로 되어 있습니다. 그러나 주님께서 저와 함께 계셔만 주신다면, 주님께서 이르신 대로 제가 그들을 쫓아낼 수 있을 것입니다.”

Joshua blessed Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and gave him Hebron as his heritage.
|

|
|
▶ 그러자 여호수아가 여푼네의 아들 칼렙에게 축복하고 헤브론을 상속 재산으로 주었다.

|
Therefore Hebron remains the heritage of the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, to the present day, because he was completely loyal to the LORD, the God of Israel.

▶ 그리하여 헤브론이 크나즈인 여푼네의 아들 칼렙의 상속 재산이 되어 오늘에 이른다. 그가 주 이스라엘의 하느님을 온전히 따랐기 때문이다.

Hebron was formerly called Kiriath-arba, for Arba, the greatest among the Anakim. And the land enjoyed peace.
|

▶ 헤브론의 옛 이름은 키르얏 아르바였는데, 아르바는 아낙인들 가운데 가장 큰 인물이었다. 이로써 전쟁은 끝나고 이 땅은 평온해졌다.
