When the news reached the kings west of the Jordan, in the mountain regions and in the foothills, and all along the coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon: Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites,

they all formed an alliance to launch a common attack against Joshua and Israel.

put into effect a device of their own. They chose provisions for a journey, making use of old sacks for their asses, and old wineskins, torn and mended.

▶ 그들 나름대로 속임수를 쓰기로 하였다. 그래서 그들은 양식을 싼 다음, 낡아 빠진 자루와 낡고 갈라져서 꿰맨 포도주 부대를 나귀에 싣고서 길을 떠났다.

They wore old, patched sandals and shabby garments; and all the bread they took was dry and crumbly.
|

|
▶ 발에도 낡아 빠져 기운 신을 신고 몸에도 낡아 빠진 옷을 걸쳤다. 양식으로 마련한 빵은 모두 마르고 부스러져 있었다.

Thus they journeyed to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal, where they said to him and to the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant land to propose that you make an alliance with us."

▶ 그들은 길갈 진영으로 여호수아를 찾아가서, 그와 이스라엘 사람들에게 말하였다. “저희는 먼 고장에서 왔습니다. 이제 저희와 계약을 맺어 주십시오.”

But the men of Israel replied to the Hivites, "You may be living in land that is ours. How, then, can we make an alliance with you?"

▶ 이스라엘 사람들이 그 히위족에게, “그대들은 우리 가운데에 사는 것 같은데, 우리가 어찌 그대들과 계약을 맺어 줄 수 있겠소?” 하자,

But they answered Joshua, "We are your servants." Then Joshua asked them, "Who are you? Where do you come from?"

▶ 그들이 여호수아에게 “저희는 나리의 종들입니다.” 하고 대답하였다. 여호수아가 그들에게 “그대들은 누구며 어디에서 왔소?” 하고 물으니,

They answered him, "Your servants have come from a far-off land, because of the fame of the LORD, your God. For we have heard reports of all that he did in Egypt
|

▶ 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. “이 종들은 주 나리의 하느님 이름 때문에 아주 먼 고장에서 왔습니다. 저희는 그분에 대한 소문을 들었습니다. 그분께서 이집트에서 하신 모든 일이며,

and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan, Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan, who lived in Ashtaroth.

▶ 요르단 건너편의 두 아모리족 임금, 곧 헤스본 임금 시혼과 아스타롯에 살던 바산 임금 옥에게 하신 일을 다 들었습니다.

So our elders and all the inhabitants of our country said to us, 'Take along provisions for the journey and go to meet them. Say to them: We are your servants; we propose that you make an alliance with us.'
|

|
|
▶ 그래서 저희 원로들과 저희 고장 주민들이 모두 저희에게 말하였습니다. ‘여행 양식을 손에 들고 그들을 만나러 가서 ′저희는 여러분의 종입니다. 그러니 이제 저희와 계약을 맺어 주십시오.′ 하고 말하여라.’

This bread of ours was still warm when we brought it from home as provisions the day we left to come to you, but now it is dry and crumbled.

|
▶ 여기에 저희 빵이 있습니다. 여러분에게 오려고 저희가 떠나오던 날 집에서 그것을 쌀 때에는 따뜻하였습니다. 그런데 이제 보십시오, 마르고 부스러졌습니다.

|
Here are our wineskins, which were new when we filled them, but now they are torn. Look at our garments and sandals, which are worn out from the very long journey."

|
▶ 이 술 부대도 저희가 술을 채울 때에는 새것이었습니다. 그런데 보십시오, 이렇게 갈라졌습니다. 또 저희의 옷과 신도 아주 먼 길을 오다 보니 이렇게 낡아 버렸습니다.”

|
Then the Israelite princes partook of their provisions, without seeking the advice of the LORD.
|

|
▶ 이스라엘 사람들은 주님의 뜻을 여쭈어 보지도 않고 그들에게서 양식을 받았다.
|
|

|
So Joshua made an alliance with them and entered into an agreement to spare them, which the princes of the community sealed with an oath.
|

|
|
|
|
|
▶ 여호수아는 그들과 평화롭게 지내기로 하고 그들을 살려 준다는 계약을 맺었다. 공동체의 수장들도 그들에게 맹세해 주었다.

|
Three days after the agreement was entered into, the Israelites learned that these people were from nearby, and would be living in Israel.
|

▶ 그런데 그들과 계약을 맺은 지 사흘 만에, 이스라엘 사람들은 그들이 가까이 살 뿐만 아니라 바로 자기들 가운데에 산다는 말을 듣게 되었다.

The third day on the road, the Israelites came to their cities of Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath-jearim,

▶ 그래서 이스라엘 사람들은 길을 떠나 사흘째 되는 날에 그들의 성읍에 다다랐다. 그들의 성읍은 기브온, 크피라, 브에롯, 키르얏 여아림이었다.

but did not attack them, because the princes of the community had sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. When the entire community grumbled against the princes,

▶ 그러나 이스라엘 자손들은 그들을 치지 않았다. 공동체의 수장들이 주 이스라엘의 하느님을 두고 그들에게 맹세해 주었기 때문이다. 그래서 온 공동체가 수장들에게 불평하였다.

these all remonstrated with the people, "We have sworn to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and so we cannot harm them.

▶ 그러자 모든 수장이 온 공동체에게 말하였다. “우리가 주 이스라엘의 하느님을 두고 그들에게 맹세해 주었으니, 이제는 그들에게 손을 댈 수 없소.

Let us therefore spare their lives and so deal with them that we shall not be punished for the oath we have sworn to them."

▶ 우리가 그들에게 할 일은 이러하오. 곧 그들을 살려 주어, 우리가 그들에게 해 준 그 맹세 때문에 우리에게 진노가 내리지 않게 하는 것이오.”

Thus the princes recommended that they be let live, as hewers of wood and drawers of water for the entire community; and the community did as the princes advised them.
|

▶ 수장들이 또 말하였다. “그들을 살려 줍시다.” 그래서 수장들이 결정한 대로, 그들은 온 공동체를 위하여 나무를 패는 자와 물을 긷는 자가 되었다.

Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said to them, "Why did you lie to us and say that you lived at a great distance from us, when you will be living in our very midst?

|
|
▶ 여호수아가 그들을 불러다가 일렀다. “그대들은 어찌하여 우리 가운데에 살면서도 ‘저희는 아주 먼 고장에서 왔습니다.’ 하면서 우리를 속였소?

For this are you accursed: every one of you shall always be a slave (hewers of wood and drawers of water) for the house of my God."
|

|
|
|
▶ 이제 그대들은 저주를 받아, 그대들 가운데 일부는 영원히 종이 되어 내 하느님의 집에서 쓸 나무를 패거나 물을 긷게 될 것이오.”
|

|
They answered Joshua, "Your servants were fully informed of how the LORD, your God, commanded his servant Moses that you be given the entire land and that all its inhabitants be destroyed before you. Since, therefore, at your advance, we were in great fear for our lives, we acted as we did.
|

▶ 그러자 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. “이 땅을 모두 여러분에게 주고 이 땅의 모든 주민을 여러분 앞에서 멸망시키라고, 주 하느님께서 당신의 종 모세에게 명령하셨다는 것을 저희가 분명히 들었기 때문입니다. 그래서 저희는 여러분 때문에 목숨을 잃을까 몹시 두려운 나머지, 이런 일을 하게 된 것입니다.

|
And now that we are in your power, do with us what you think fit and right."

▶ 이제 저희는 나리의 손안에 있습니다. 나리의 눈에 좋고 옳게 보이는 대로 저희 일을 처리하십시오.”

Joshua did what he had decided: while he saved them from being killed by the Israelites,

|
▶ 그래서 여호수아는 그들의 일을 이렇게 처리하였다. 곧 그들을 이스라엘 자손들의 손에서 구해 주고 죽이지 못하게 하였다.

|
at the same time he made them, as they still are, hewers of wood and drawers of water for the community and for the altar of the LORD, in the place of the LORD'S choice.
|

|
|
▶ 그리고 바로 그날에 여호수아는 그들을 공동체가 쓸 나무와 주님의 제단에서 쓸 나무를 패는 자로, 또 물을 긷는 자로 정하였다. 그래서 그들은 오늘날까지도 주님께서 선택하시는 곳에서 그 일을 하고 있다.
