Boaz went and took a seat at the gate; and when he saw the closer relative of whom he had spoken come along, he called to him by name, "Come and sit beside me!" And he did so.

▶ 보아즈는 성문으로 올라가 거기에 앉았다. 때마침 보아즈가 말하던 그 구원자가 지나갔다. 보아즈가 “여보게, 이리로 와서 앉게.” 하고 말하니 그가 와서 앉았다.

Then Boaz picked out ten of the elders of the city and asked them to sit nearby. When they had done this,

▶ 보아즈가 마을 원로들 가운데 열 사람을 데려다가, “여기 앉으십시오.” 하자 그들이 앉았다.

he said to the near relative: "Naomi, who has come back from the Moabite plateau, is putting up for sale the piece of land that belonged to our kinsman Elimelech.

▶ 그러자 보아즈가 그 구원자에게 말하였다. “우리 형제 엘리멜렉에게 속한 밭을 모압 지방에서 돌아온 나오미가 팔려고 내놓았네.
|

So I thought I would inform you, bidding you before those here present, including the elders of my people, to put in your claim for it if you wish to acquire it as next of kin. But if you do not wish to claim it, tell me so, that I may be guided accordingly, for no one has a prior claim to yours, and mine is next." He answered, "I will put in my claim."

▶ 그래서 내가 그대에게 이 소식을 알리고 이렇게 말하리라고 생각하였네. ‘여기 앉아 계신 분들과 내 겨레의 원로들 앞에서 그것을 사들이게. 그대가 구원 의무를 실행하려면 그렇게 하게. 그러나 그 의무를 실행하지 않으려면 나에게 알려 주게. 구원 의무를 실행할 사람은 그대밖에 없고, 그대 다음은 나라는 것을 알고 있네.’” 그러자 그는 “내가 구원 의무를 실행하겠네.” 하고 대답하였다.

Boaz continued, "Once you acquire the field from Naomi, you must take also Ruth the Moabite, the widow of the late heir, and raise up a family for the departed on his estate."

▶ 보아즈가 다시 “나오미에게서 그 밭을 사들이는 날에 그대는 고인의 아내인 모압 여자 룻도 맞아들여, 고인의 이름을 그의 소유지 위에 세워 주어야 하네.” 하고 말하였다.

The near relative replied, "I cannot exercise my claim lest I depreciate my own estate. Put in a claim yourself in my stead, for I cannot exercise my claim."

▶ 그러자 그 구원자가 대답하였다. “그렇다면 나로서는 구원 의무를 실행할 수 없네. 내 재산을 망치고 싶지는 않다네. 나는 구원 의무를 실행할 수 없으니 내 구원자 의무를 그대가 실행하게.”

Now it used to be the custom in Israel that, to make binding a contract of redemption or exchange, one party would take off his sandal and give it to the other. This was the form of attestation in Israel.

▶ 옛날 이스라엘에는 구원하거나 교환할 때, 무슨 일이든 확정 짓기 위하여 자기 신을 벗어서 상대편에게 주는 관습이 있었는데, 이것이 이스라엘에서는 증거로 통하였다.

So the near relative, in saying to Boaz, "Acquire it for yourself," drew off his sandal.

▶ 그 구원자는 보아즈에게 “자네가 사들이게.” 하며 자기 신을 벗어서 건네주었다.

Boaz then said to the elders and to all the people, "You are witnesses today that I have acquired from Naomi all the holdings of Elimelech, Chilion and Mahlon.
|

▶ 그러자 보아즈는 원로들과 온 백성에게 말하였다. “엘리멜렉에게 속한 모든 것과 킬욘과 마흘론에게 속한 모든 것을 제가 나오미의 손에서 사들인 사실에 대하여 여러분은 오늘 증인이 되셨습니다.

I also take Ruth the Moabite, the widow of Mahlon, as my wife, in order to raise up a family for her late husband on his estate, so that the name of the departed may not perish among his kinsmen and fellow citizens. Do you witness this today?"

▶ 고인의 이름을 그의 소유지 위에 세워, 고인의 이름이 형제들 사이에서, 그리고 그의 고을 성문에서 없어지지 않도록 마흘론의 아내인 모압 여자 룻을 제 아내로 맞아들입니다. 여러분은 오늘 이 일에 대해서도 증인이십니다.”

All those at the gate, including the elders, said, "We do so. May the LORD make this wife come into your house like Rachel and Leah, who between them built up the house of Israel. May you do well in Ephrathah and win fame in Bethlehem.

▶ 그러자 성문에 있던 온 백성과 원로들이 말하였다. “우리가 증인이오. 주님께서 그대 집에 들어가는 그 여인을, 둘이서 함께 이스라엘 집안을 세운 라헬과 레아처럼 되게 해 주시기를 기원하오. 그리고 그대가 에프라타에서 번성하고 베들레헴에서 이름을 떨치기를 비오.

With the offspring the LORD will give you from this girl, may your house become like the house of Perez, whom Tamar bore to Judah."

▶ 또한 그대의 집안이 주님께서 이 젊은 여인을 통하여 그대에게 주실 후손으로 말미암아, 타마르가 유다에게 낳아 준 페레츠 집안처럼 되기를 기원하오.”

Boaz took Ruth. When they came together as man and wife, the LORD enabled her to conceive and she bore a son.
|

|
▶ 이렇게 보아즈가 룻을 맞이하여 룻은 그의 아내가 되었다. 그가 룻과 한자리에 드니, 주님께서 점지해 주시어 룻이 아들을 낳았다.

Then the women said to Naomi, "Blessed is the LORD who has not failed to provide you today with an heir! May he become famous in Israel!

▶ 그러자 아낙네들이 나오미에게 말하였다. “오늘 그대에게 대를 이을 구원자가 끊어지지 않게 해 주신 주님께서는 찬미받으시기를 빕니다. 이 아이의 이름이 이스라엘에서 기려지기를 바랍니다.

He will be your comfort and the support of your old age, for his mother is the daughter-in-law who loves you. She is worth more to you than seven sons!"

Naomi took the child, placed him on her lap, and became his nurse.

And the neighbor women gave him his name, at the news that a grandson had been born to Naomi. They called him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

▶ 이웃 아낙네들은 그 아기의 이름을 부르며, “나오미가 아들을 보았네.” 하고 말하였다. 그의 이름은 오벳이라 하였는데, 그가 다윗의 아버지인 이사이의 아버지다.
