Then, from a flask he had with him, Samuel poured oil on Saul's head; he also kissed him, saying: "The LORD anoints you commander over his heritage. You are to govern the LORD'S people Israel, and to save them from the grasp of their enemies round about. "This will be the sign for you that the LORD has anointed you commander over his heritage:

When you leave me today, you will meet two men near Rachel's tomb at Zelzah in the territory of Benjamin, who will say to you, 'The asses you went to look for have been found. Your father is no longer worried about the asses, but is anxious about you and says, What shall I do about my son?'

Farther on, when you arrive at the terebinth of Tabor, you will be met by three men going up to God at Bethel; one will be bringing three kids, another three loaves of bread, and the third a skin of wine.

They will greet you and offer you two wave offerings of bread, which you will take from them.

After that you will come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. As you enter that city, you will meet a band of prophets, in a prophetic state, coming down from the high place preceded by lyres, tambourines, flutes and harps.

The spirit of the LORD will rush upon you, and you will join them in their prophetic state and will be changed into another man.

When you see these signs fulfilled, do whatever you judge feasible, because God is with you.

Now go down ahead of me to Gilgal, for I shall come down to you, to offer holocausts and to sacrifice peace offerings. Wait seven days until I come to you; I shall then tell you what you must do."

Fulfillment of the Signs

As Saul turned to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. That very day all these signs came to pass. . . .

▶ 사울이 몸을 돌려 사무엘을 떠나가려는데, 하느님께서 사울의 마음을 바꾸어 주셨고, 바로 그날 이런 표징들이 모두 일어났다.

When they were going from there to Gibeah, a band of prophets met him, and the spirit of God rushed upon him, so that he joined them in their prophetic state.

▶ 사울이 종과 함께 그곳 기브아에 이르렀을 때, 예언자의 무리가 오고 있었다. 그러자 하느님의 영이 사울에게 들이닥쳐, 그도 그들 가운데에서 황홀경에 빠져 예언하였다.

When all who had known him previously saw him in a prophetic state among the prophets, they said to one another, "What has happened to the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?"

▶ 사울을 전부터 아는 사람들은 모두, 그가 예언자들과 함께 황홀경에 빠져 예언하는 것을 보고, “키스의 아들에게 무슨 일이 일어났지? 사울도 예언자들 가운데 하나인가?” 하고 서로 말하였다.

And someone from that district added, "And who is their father?" Thus the proverb arose, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

▶ 거기에 있던 사람 하나가 “이들의 아버지가 도대체 누구지?” 하고 물었다. 그리하여 “사울도 예언자들 가운데 하나인가?”라는 속담이 생겨났다.

When he came out of the prophetic state, he went home.

|
Saul's uncle inquired of him and his servant, "Where have you been?" Saul replied, "To look for the asses. When we could not find them, we went to Samuel."

Then Saul's uncle said, "Tell me, then, what Samuel said to you."

▶ 사울의 삼촌이 다시 물었다. “사무엘께서 너희에게 무슨 말씀을 하시더냐? 어서 말해 보아라.”

Saul said to his uncle, "He assured us that the asses had been found." But he mentioned nothing to him of what Samuel had said about the kingship.

But today you have rejected your God, who delivers you from all your evils and calamities, by saying to him, 'Not so, but you must appoint a king over us.' Now, therefore, take your stand before the LORD according to tribes and families."

So Samuel had all the tribes of Israel come forward, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen.

Next he had the tribe of Benjamin come forward in clans, and the clan of Matri was chosen, and finally Saul, son of Kish, was chosen. But they looked for him in vain.

▶ 다시 벤야민 지파를 씨족별로 가까이 오게 하자 마트리 씨족이 뽑혔고, 이어 키스의 아들 사울이 뽑혔다. 그래서 사람들이 그를 찾아보았으나 그는 보이지 않았다.

Again they consulted the LORD, "Has he come here?" The LORD answered, "He is hiding among the baggage."

They ran to bring him from there; and when he stood among the people, he was head and shoulders above all the crowd.

Samuel said to all the people, "Do you see the man whom the LORD has chosen? There is none like him among all the people!" Then all the people shouted, "Long live the king!"

▶ 사무엘이 온 백성에게 “주님께서 뽑으신 이를 보았소? 온 백성 가운데 이만 한 인물이 없소.” 하고 말하자, 온 백성이 환호하며 “임금님 만세!” 하고 외쳤다.

Samuel next explained to the people the law of royalty and wrote it in a book, which he placed in the presence of the LORD. This done, Samuel dismissed the people, each to his own place.

▶ 사무엘은 백성에게 왕정의 권한을 설명하고, 그것을 책에 적어 주님 앞에 두었다. 그런 뒤에 온 백성을 저마다 자기 집으로 돌려보냈다.

Saul also went home to Gibeah, accompanied by warriors whose hearts the LORD had touched.

But certain worthless men said, "How can this fellow save us?" They despised him and brought him no present.
|

▶ 그런데 몇몇 불량한 자들은 “이 친구가 어떻게 우리를 구할 수 있으랴?” 하면서, 사울을 업신여기고 그에게 예물도 바치지 않았다. 그러나 사울은 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
