when they summoned priests and fortune-tellers to ask, "What shall we do with the ark of the LORD? Tell us what we should send back with it."

▶ 필리스티아인들은 사제들과 점쟁이들을 불러 놓고 물었다. “주님의 궤를 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까? 우리가 어떻게 그 궤를 제자리로 돌려보낼 수 있는지 알려 주십시오.”

They replied: "If you intend to send away the ark of the God of Israel, you must not send it alone, but must, by all means, make amends to him through a guilt offering. Then you will be healed, and will learn why he continues to afflict you."

▶ 그들이 대답하였다. “이스라엘 하느님의 궤를 돌려보내려면, 그냥 보내서는 안 됩니다. 반드시 그 하느님에게 보상 제물을 바쳐야 합니다. 그래야 여러분의 병이 나을 것이고, 그가 왜 여러분에게서 손을 거두지 않는지도 알게 될 것입니다.”

When asked further, "What guilt offering should be our amends to him?", they replied: "Five golden hemorrhoids and five golden mice to correspond to the number of Philistine lords, since the same plague has struck all of you and your lords.

▶ “그러면 그 하느님에게 무엇을 보상 제물로 바쳐야 합니까?” 하고 필리스티아인들이 묻자, 그들이 이렇게 일러 주었다. “필리스티아인들의 통치자들 수만큼, 금으로 종기 다섯 개와 쥐 다섯 마리를 만들어 함께 보내십시오. 같은 재앙이 여러분 모두와 여러분의 통치자들에게 닥쳤기 때문입니다.

Therefore, make images of the hemorrhoids and of the mice that are infesting your land and give them as a tribute to the God of Israel. Perhaps then he will cease to afflict you, your gods, and your land.

Why should you become stubborn, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh were stubborn? Was it not after he had dealt ruthlessly with them that the Israelites were released and departed?

So now set to work and make a new cart. Then take two milch cows that have not borne the yoke; hitch them to the cart, but drive their calves indoors away from them.

You shall next take the ark of the LORD and place it on the cart, putting in a box beside it the golden articles that you are offering, as amends for your guilt. Start it on its way, and let it go.

Then watch! If it goes to Beth-shemesh along the route to his own territory, he has brought this great calamity upon us; if not, we will know it was not he who struck us, but that an accident happened to us."

They acted upon this advice. Taking two milch cows, they hitched them to the cart but shut up their calves indoors.

Then they placed the ark of the LORD on the cart, along with the box containing the golden mice and the images of the hemorrhoids.

▶ 수레에는 주님의 궤를 싣고, 금으로 만든 쥐와 종기 모양의 물건들을 담은 상자도 실었다.

The cows went straight for the route to Beth-shemesh and continued along this road, mooing as they went, without turning right or left. The Philistine lords followed them as far as the border of Beth-shemesh.

▶ 그러자 소들은 벳 세메스 쪽으로 난 길을 따라 곧장 걸어갔다. 소들은 울음소리를 내면서 한 길만을 따라갔는데, 오른쪽으로도 왼쪽으로도 벗어나지 않았다. 필리스티아인들의 통치자들은 그 뒤를 따라 벳 세메스 경계까지 갔다.

|
The people of Beth-shemesh were harvesting the wheat in the valley. When they looked up and spied the ark, they greeted it with rejoicing.

▶ 그때에 벳 세메스인들은 골짜기에서 밀을 거두어들이다가, 눈을 들어 궤를 보고는 기뻐하며 나가 맞았다.

The cart came to the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite and stopped there. At a large stone in the field, the wood of the cart was split up and the cows were offered as a holocaust to the LORD.

▶ 수레는 벳 세메스 사람 여호수아의 밭에 와서 멈추었는데, 거기에는 커다란 바위가 하나 있었다. 그들은 수레를 부수어 장작을 만들고, 그 소들을 주님께 번제물로 바쳤다.

|
The Levites, meanwhile, had taken down the ark of God and the box beside it, in which the golden articles were, and had placed them on the great stone. The men of Beth-shemesh also offered other holocausts and sacrifices to the LORD that day.

After witnessing this, the five Philistine lords returned to Ekron the same day.

The golden hemorrhoids the Philistines sent back as a guilt offering to the LORD were as follows: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, and one for Ekron.

|
The golden mice, however, corresponded to the number of all the cities of the Philistines belonging to the five lords, including fortified cities and open villages. The large stone on which the ark of the LORD was placed is still in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite at the present time.

▶ 금으로 만든 쥐는 다섯 통치자들이 다스리던 필리스티아인들의 모든 성읍, 곧 요새 성읍들과 성벽이 없는 마을 수에 맞춘 것이었다. 주님의 궤를 올려놓았던 그 큰 바위는 오늘날까지도 벳 세메스 사람 여호수아의 밭에 그대로 있다.

The descendants of Jeconiah did not join in the celebration with the inhabitants of Beth-shemesh when they greeted the ark of the LORD, and seventy of them were struck down. The people went into mourning at this great calamity with which the LORD had afflicted them.

▶ 그런데 주님께서는 벳 세메스 사람들이 주님의 궤를 보았기 때문에 그들을 치셨다. 그 백성 가운데에서 일흔 명과 오만 명을 치신 것이다. 주님께서 그 백성을 그토록 크게 치셨기 때문에 그들은 애도하였다.

The men of Beth-shemesh asked, "Who can stand in the presence of this Holy One? To whom shall he go from us?"

They then sent messengers to the inhabitants of Kiriath-jearim, saying, "The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD; come down and get it."

▶ 그러다가 그들은 키르얏 여아림 주민들에게 심부름꾼들을 보내어, “필리스티아인들이 주님의 궤를 돌려보냈소. 내려와 모시고 올라가 주시오.” 하고 청하였다.
