The LORD'S anger against Israel flared again, and he incited David against the Israelites by prompting him to number Israel and Judah.

▶ 주님께서 다시 이스라엘인들에게 진노하셔서, 그들을 치시려고 다윗을 부추기시며 말씀하셨다. “가서 이스라엘과 유다의 인구를 조사하여라.”

Accordingly the king said to Joab and the leaders of the army who were with him, "Tour all the tribes in Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba and register the people, that I may know their number."

▶ 그리하여 임금은 자기가 데리고 있는 군대의 장수 요압에게 말하였다. “단에서 브에르 세바에 이르기까지 이스라엘의 모든 지파를 두루 다니며 인구를 조사하시오. 내가 백성의 수를 알고자 하오.”

But Joab said to the king: "May the LORD your God increase the number of people a hundredfold for your royal majesty to see it with his own eyes. But why does it please my lord the king to order a thing of this kind?"

▶ 그러나 요압이 임금에게 아뢰었다. “주 임금님의 하느님께서 백성을 지금보다 백 배나 불어나게 하시어, 저의 주군이신 임금님께서 친히 그것을 보시게 되기를 바랍니다만, 저의 주군이신 임금님께서는 어찌하여 이런 일을 하려고 하십니까?”

The king, however, overruled Joab and the leaders of the army, so they left the king's presence in order to register the people of Israel.

|
▶ 그러나 임금의 말이 요압과 군대의 장수들을 위압하였다. 그리하여 요압과 군대의 장수들은 임금 앞에서 물러 나와, 이스라엘의 인구를 조사하러 떠났다.

Crossing the Jordan, they began near Aroer, south of the city in the wadi, and went in the direction of Gad toward Jazer.

They continued on to Gilead and to the district below Mount Hermon. Then they proceeded to Dan; from there they turned toward Sidon,

going to the fortress of Tyre and to all the cities of the Hivites and Canaanites, and ending up at Beer-sheba in the Negeb of Judah.

Thus they toured the whole country, reaching Jerusalem again after nine months and twenty days.

Joab then reported to the king the number of people registered: in Israel, eight hundred thousand men fit for military service; in Judah, five hundred thousand.
|

|
▶ 요압이 조사한 백성의 수를 임금에게 보고하였는데, 이스라엘에서 칼을 다룰 수 있는 장정이 팔십만 명, 유다에서 오십만 명이었다.

Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people, and said to the LORD: "I have sinned grievously in what I have done. But now, LORD, forgive the guilt of your servant, for I have been very foolish."

▶ 다윗은 이렇게 인구 조사를 한 다음, 양심에 가책을 느껴 주님께 말씀드렸다. “제가 이런 짓으로 큰 죄를 지었습니다. 그러나 주님, 이제 당신 종의 죄악을 없애 주십시오. 제가 참으로 어리석은 일을 저질렀습니다.”

The Pestilence

When David rose in the morning, the LORD had spoken to the prophet Gad, David's seer, saying:

▶ 이튿날 아침 다윗이 일어났을 때, 주님의 말씀이 다윗의 환시가인 가드 예언자에게 내렸다.

"Go and say to David, 'This is what the LORD says: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you.'"

▶ “다윗에게 가서 ‘주님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다.’ 하면서 일러라. ‘내가 너에게 세 가지를 내놓을 터이니, 그 가운데에서 하나를 골라라. 그러면 내가 너에게 그대로 해 주겠다.’”

Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: "Do you want a three years' famine to come upon your land, or to flee from your enemy three months while he pursues you, or to have a three days' pestilence in your land? Now consider and decide what I must reply to him who sent me."

▶ 가드가 다윗에게 가서 이렇게 알렸다. "임금님 나라에 일곱 해 동안 기근이 드는 것이 좋습니까? 아니면, 임금님을 뒤쫓는 적들을 피하여 석 달 동안 도망 다니시는 것이 좋습니까? 아니면, 임금님 나라에 사흘 동안 흑사병이 퍼지는 것이 좋습니까? 저를 보내신 분께 무엇이라고 회답해야 할지 지금 잘 생각하여 결정하시기 바랍니다."

David answered Gad: "I am in very serious difficulty. Let us fall by the hand of God, for he is most merciful; but let me not fall by the hand of man."

▶ 그러자 다윗이 가드에게 말하였다. “괴롭기 그지없구려. 그러나 주님의 자비는 크시니, 사람 손에 당하는 것보다 주님 손에 당하는 것이 낫겠소.”

Thus David chose the pestilence. Now it was the time of the wheat harvest when the plague broke out among the people. (The LORD then sent a pestilence over Israel from morning until the time appointed, and seventy thousand of the people from Dan to Beer-sheba died.)

▶ 그리하여 주님께서 그날 아침부터 정해진 날까지 이스라엘에 흑사병을 내리시니, 단에서 브에르 세바까지 백성 가운데에서 칠만 명이 죽었다.

But when the angel stretched forth his hand toward Jerusalem to destroy it, the LORD regretted the calamity and said to the angel causing the destruction among the people, "Enough now! Stay your hand." The angel of the LORD was then standing at the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite.

▶ 천사가 예루살렘을 파멸시키려고 그쪽으로 손을 뻗치자, 주님께서 재앙을 내리신 것을 후회하시고 백성을 파멸시키는 천사에게 이르셨다. “이제 됐다. 손을 거두어라.” 그때에 주님의 천사는 여부스 사람 아라우나의 타작마당에 있었다.

When David saw the angel who was striking the people, he said to the LORD: "It is I who have sinned; it is I, the shepherd, who have done wrong. But these are sheep; what have they done? Punish me and my kindred."

▶ 백성을 치는 천사를 보고, 다윗이 주님께 아뢰었다. “제가 바로 죄를 지었습니다. 제가 못된 짓을 하였습니다. 그러나 이 양들이야 무슨 잘못이 있습니까? 그러니 제발 당신 손으로 저와 제 아버지의 집안을 쳐 주십시오.”

On the same day Gad went to David and said to him, "Go up and build an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite."

▶ 가드가 그날 다윗에게 와서 말하였다. “여부스 사람 아라우나의 타작마당에 올라가시어 주님을 위한 제단을 세우십시오.”

Following Gad's bidding, David went up as the LORD had commanded.

▶ 다윗은 가드의 말에 따라 주님께서 명령하신 대로 그곳에 올라갔다.

|
Now Araunah looked down and noticed the king and his servants coming toward him while he was threshing wheat. So he went out and paid homage to the king, with face to the ground.
|

|
|
|
|
▶ 아라우나가 내려다보니, 임금과 그 신하들이 자기에게 건너오고 있었다. 아라우나는 곧 임금 앞에 나아가 얼굴을 땅에 대고 절하였다.

Then Araunah asked, "Why does my lord the king come to his servant?" David replied, "To buy the threshing floor from you, to build an altar to the LORD, that the plague may be checked among the people."

|
|
▶ 그러고 나서 아라우나는 “저의 주군이신 임금님께서 무슨 일로 이 종에게 오셨습니까?” 하고 물었다. 다윗이 대답하였다. “그대에게 타작마당을 사서 주님을 위한 제단을 쌓아 드리려고 하오. 그러면 재난이 백성에게서 돌아설 것이오.”

But Araunah said to David: "Let my lord the king take and offer up whatever he may wish. Here are oxen for holocausts, and threshing sledges and the yokes of the oxen for wood.

▶ 그러자 아라우나가 다윗에게 말하였다. “저의 주군이신 임금님께서 보시기에 좋은 것은 무엇이나 가져다가 바치십시오. 여기 번제물로 바칠 소도 있고, 땔감으로 쓸 탈곡기와 소 멍에도 있습니다.

All this does Araunah give to the king." Araunah then said to the king, "May the LORD your God accept your offering."

|
▶ 임금님, 아라우나가 이 모든 것을 임금님께 드립니다.” 그리고 아라우나는 임금에게 이렇게 덧붙여 말하였다. “주 임금님의 하느님께서 임금님을 기꺼이 받아 주시기 바랍니다.”

The king, however, replied to Araunah, "No, I must pay you for it, for I cannot offer to the LORD my God holocausts that cost nothing." So David bought the threshing floor and the oxen for fifty silver shekels.
|

|
▶ 그러나 임금은 아라우나에게 “아니오. 당신에게 값을 주고 그것을 사야겠소. 나는 거저 얻은 것을 주 나의 하느님께 바치지는 않겠소.” 하고 말하였다. 다윗은 은 쉰 세켈을 주고 타작마당과 소를 샀다.

Then David built an altar there to the LORD, and offered holocausts and peace offerings. The LORD granted relief to the country, and the plague was checked in Israel.

▶ 그러고 나서 다윗은 주님을 위하여 제단을 쌓고 번제물과 친교 제물을 바쳤다. 주님께서 나라를 위하여 바치는 그의 간청을 들어주시니, 이스라엘에 내리던 재난이 그쳤다.
