In the year one hundred and forty-nine, Judas and his men learned that Antiochus Eupator was invading Judea with a large force,

and that with him was Lysias, his guardian, who was in charge of the government. They led a Greek army of one hundred and ten thousand foot soldiers, fifty-three hundred horsemen, twenty-two elephants, and three hundred chariots armed with scythes.

Menelaus also joined them, and with great duplicity kept urging Antiochus on, not for the welfare of his country, but in the hope of being established in office.

▶ 그때에 메넬라오스도 그리스 군대와 어울려 매우 교활한 말로 안티오코스를 부추겼다. 그것은 조국을 구하려는 것이 아니라 대사제직에 재임명되려는 속셈에서 한 일이었다.

But the King of kings aroused the anger of Antiochus against the scoundrel. When the king was shown by Lysias that Menelaus was to blame for all the trouble, he ordered him to be taken to Beroea and executed there in the customary local method.

▶ 그러나 임금들의 임금이신 분께서는 안티오코스가 이 악한에게 분노를 터뜨리게 하셨다. 그리하여 메넬라오스가 모든 환난의 원인이었다는 리시아스의 말을 들은 안티오코스는, 그자를 베로이아로 끌고 가서 그쪽 지방의 관습에 따라 처형하라고 명령하였다.

There is at that place a tower seventy-five feet high, full of ashes, with a circular rim sloping down steeply on all sides toward the ashes.

A man guilty of sacrilege or notorious for certain other crimes is brought up there and then hurled down to destruction.

▶ 성물을 훔치는 죄나 그 밖의 가증스러운 범죄 행위를 저지른 자들은 모두 그 속으로 밀어 떨어뜨려 죽였다.

In such a manner was Menelaus, the transgressor of the law, fated to die; he was deprived even of decent burial.

It was altogether just that he who had committed so many sins against the altar with its pure fire and ashes should meet his death in ashes.

The king was advancing, his mind full of savage plans for inflicting on the Jews worse things than those they suffered in his father's time.

When Judas learned of this, he urged the people to call upon the LORD night and day, to help them now, if ever,

▶ 이 보고를 받은 유다는 그 어느 때보다도 바로 지금 주님께서 도와주셔야 한다고 밤낮으로 주님께 탄원하라고 백성에게 명령하였다.

when they were about to be deprived of their law, their country, and their holy temple; and not to allow this nation, which had just begun to revive, to be subjected again to blasphemous Gentiles.

|
|
▶ 그들이 율법과 조국과 거룩한 성전을 곧 빼앗기게 되었던 것이다. 유다는 또 최근에야 잠시 숨을 돌리게 된 이 백성이 하느님을 모독하는 이교도들의 손에 넘어가지 않게 해 주시도록 탄원하라고 하였다.

When they had all joined in doing this, and had implored the merciful LORD continuously with weeping and fasting and prostrations for three days, Judas encouraged them and told them to stand ready.

▶ 사람들은 다 함께 그렇게 하였다. 그들은 사흘 동안 눈물을 흘리고 단식하며 땅에 엎드려 자비하신 주님께 끊임없이 간청하였다. 유다는 그들을 격려하며 준비를 하라고 지시하였다.

After a private meeting with the elders, he decided that, before the king's army could invade Judea and take possession of the city, the Jews should march out and settle the matter with God's help.

▶ 원로들과 따로 의논한 뒤에, 유다는 임금의 군대가 유다 땅에 쳐들어와서 도성을 점령하기 전에 자기들이 먼저 나가서 하느님의 도우심으로 결판을 내기로 결심하였다.

Leaving the outcome to the Creator of the world, and exhorting his followers to fight nobly to death for the laws, the temple, the city, the country, and the government, he pitched his camp near Modein.

▶ 그리고 그 결과를 온 세상의 창조주께 맡기고, 군사들에게 법과 성전과 도성과 조국과 생활양식을 위하여 죽기까지 고결하게 싸우라고 격려한 다음, 모데인 근처에 진을 쳤다.

Giving his men the battle cry "God's Victory," he made a night attack on the king's pavilion with a picked force of the bravest young men and killed about two thousand in the camp. They also slew the lead elephant and its rider.

▶ 그는 ‘하느님의 승리’라는 표어를 군사들에게 정해 준 다음, 가장 뛰어난 젊은이들로 이루어진 정병을 데리고 밤중에 임금의 처소를 습격하여, 적진에서 이천 명가량을 죽이고 선봉 코끼리와 그 위에 타고 있는 병사도 찔러 죽였다.

Finally they withdrew in triumph, having filled the camp with terror and confusion.

Day was just breaking when this was accomplished with the help and protection of the LORD.

The king, having had a taste of the Jews' daring, tried to take their positions by a stratagem.

So he marched against Beth-zur, a strong fortress of the Jews; but he was driven back, checked, and defeated.

Judas then sent supplies to the men inside,

but Rhodocus, of the Jewish army, betrayed military secrets to the enemy. He was found out, arrested, and imprisoned.

▶ 그런데 유다인들의 군대에 속한 로도코스라는 자가 적군에게 비밀을 누설하였다가 발각되어 붙잡히고 감옥에 갇혔다.

The king made a second attempt by negotiating with the men of Beth-zur. After giving them his pledge and receiving theirs, he withdrew

▶ 임금은 다시 벳 추르 주민들과 교섭을 벌여 화친을 맺은 다음 거기에서 물러갔다.
|

|
and attacked Judas and his men. But he was defeated. Next he heard that Philip, who was left in charge of the government in Antioch had rebelled. Dismayed, he parleyed with the Jews, submitted to their terms, and swore to observe their rights. Having come to this agreement, he offered a sacrifice, and honored the temple with a generous donation.

▶ 그러고 나서 또 유다와 그의 군사들을 공격하였으나 상황이 악화되었다. 그뿐 아니라 자기가 행정을 맡긴 필리포스가 안티오키아에서 반역하였다는 보고를 받고 당황하여, 유다인들을 불러 그들에게 양보하고 그들의 모든 권리를 보장해 줄 것을 맹세하였다. 그들이 동의하자, 그는 희생 제물을 바쳐 성전에 경의를 표하고 그곳에 선심을 베풀었다.

He approved of Maccabeus and left him as military and civil governor of the territory from Ptolemais to the region of the Gerrenes.

When he came to Ptolemais, the people of that city were angered by the peace treaty; in fact they were so indignant that they wanted to annul its provisions.

But Lysias took the platform, defended the treaty as well as he could and won them over by persuasion. After calming them and gaining their good will, he returned to Antioch. That is how the king's attack and withdrawal went.

▶ 그래서 리시아스가 연단에 올라 최선을 다하여 설명한 끝에 그들을 설득하고 진정시켰다. 그는 이렇게 하여 그들의 호감을 사고 나서 안티오키아로 갔다. 임금의 출정과 철수는 이렇게 이루어졌다.
