|
It also happened that seven brothers with their mother were arrested and tortured with whips and scourges by the king, to force them to eat pork in violation of God's law.

▶ 그때에 어떤 일곱 형제가 어머니와 함께 체포되어 채찍과 가죽 끈으로 고초를 당하며, 법으로 금지된 돼지고기를 먹으라는 강요를 임금에게서 받은 일이 있었다.

One of the brothers, speaking for the others, said: "What do you expect to achieve by questioning us? We are ready to die rather than transgress the laws of our ancestors."

|
▶ 그들 가운데 하나가 대변자가 되어 이렇게 말하였다. “우리를 심문하여 무엇을 알아내려 하시오? 우리는 조상들의 법을 어기느니 차라리 죽을 각오가 되어 있소.”

At that the king, in a fury, gave orders to have pans and caldrons heated.

|
▶ 그러자 임금은 화가 나서 냄비와 솥을 불에 달구라고 명령하였다.
|

|
While they were being quickly heated, he commanded his executioners to cut out the tongue of the one who had spoken for the others, to scalp him and cut off his hands and feet, while the rest of his brothers and his mother looked on.

|
▶ 그것들이 바로 달구어졌을 때, 남은 형제들과 어머니가 함께 지켜보는 가운데 그 대변자의 혀를 잘라 내고 머리 가죽을 벗기고 손발을 자르라고 지시하였다.

When he was completely maimed but still breathing, the king ordered them to carry him to the fire and fry him. As a cloud of smoke spread from the pan, the brothers and their mother encouraged one another to die bravely, saying such words as these:

▶ 그리고 완전히 불구가 되었지만 아직 숨이 붙어 있는 그를 불 곁으로 옮겨 냄비에 집어넣으라고 명령하였다. 냄비에서 연기가 멀리 퍼져 나갈 때, 나머지 형제들은 고결하게 죽자고 어머니와 함께 서로 격려하며 이렇게 말하였다.

"The Lord God is looking on, and he truly has compassion on us, as Moses declared in his canticle, when he protested openly with the words, 'And he will have pity on his servants.'"

▶ “모세께서 백성에게 경고하시는 노래에서 ‘주님께서는 당신의 종들을 가엾이 여기시리라.’ 하고 분명히 밝히신 것처럼, 주 하느님께서 우리를 지켜보시고 우리에게 참으로 자비를 베푸실 것이다.”

When the first brother had died in this manner, they brought the second to be made sport of. After tearing off the skin and hair of his head, they asked him, "Will you eat the pork rather than have your body tortured limb by limb?"

▶ 첫째가 이런 식으로 죽자 그들은 둘째를 조롱하려고 끌어내었다. 그들은 머리 가죽을 머리카락째 벗겨 내고 물었다. “네 몸의 사지가 잘려 나가는 형벌을 받기 전에 이것을 먹겠느냐?”

Answering in the language of his forefathers, he said, "Never!" So he too in turn suffered the same tortures as the first.

At the point of death he said: "You accursed fiend, you are depriving us of this present life, but the King of the world will raise us up to live again forever. It is for his laws that we are dying."

▶ 마지막 숨을 거두며 말하였다. “이 사악한 인간, 당신은 우리를 이승에서 몰아내지만, 온 세상의 임금님께서는 당신의 법을 위하여 죽은 우리를 일으키시어 영원한 생명을 누리게 하실 것이오.”

After him the third suffered their cruel sport. He put out his tongue at once when told to do so, and bravely held out his hands,

▶ 그 다음에는 셋째가 조롱을 당하였다. 그는 혀를 내밀라는 말을 듣자 바로 혀를 내밀고 손까지 용감하게 내뻗으며,

as he spoke these noble words: "It was from Heaven that I received these; for the sake of his laws I disdain them; from him I hope to receive them again."

▶ 고결하게 말하였다. “이 지체들을 하늘에서 받았지만, 그분의 법을 위해서라면 나는 이것들까지도 하찮게 여기오. 그러나 그분에게서 다시 받으리라고 희망하오.”

Even the king and his attendants marveled at the young man's courage, because he regarded his sufferings as nothing.

▶ 그러자 임금은 물론 그와 함께 있던 자들까지 고통을 아무것도 아닌 것으로 여기는 그 젊은이의 기개에 놀랐다.

After he had died, they tortured and maltreated the fourth brother in the same way.

|
▶ 셋째가 죽은 다음에 그들은 넷째도 같은 식으로 괴롭히며 고문하였다.

|
When he was near death, he said, "It is my choice to die at the hands of men with the God-given hope of being restored to life by him; but for you, there will be no resurrection to life."

|
|
▶ 그는 죽는 순간이 되자 이렇게 말하였다. “하느님께서 다시 일으켜 주시리라는 희망을 간직하고, 사람들의 손에 죽는 것이 더 낫소. 그러나 당신은 부활하여 생명을 누릴 가망이 없소.”

They next brought forward the fifth brother and maltreated him. Looking at the king,

▶ 그 다음에는 다섯째가 끌려 나와 고초를 당하였다.

he said: "Since you have power among men, mortal though you are, do what you please. But do not think that our nation is forsaken by God.
|

▶ 그는 임금을 바라보며 말하였다. “당신도 죽을 몸인데 사람들에게 권력을 휘두르며 당신 마음대로 하고 있소. 그러나 우리 민족이 하느님께 버림받았다고 생각하지는 마시오.

Only wait, and you will see how his great power will torment you and your descendants."

|
|
▶ 두고 보시오. 그분의 위대한 능력이 어떻게 당신과 당신 후손을 괴롭히는지 당신이 보게 될 것이오.”

After him they brought the sixth brother. When he was about to die, he said: "Have no vain illusions. We suffer these things on our own account, because we have sinned against our God; that is why such astonishing things have happened to us.

▶ 그 다음에 그들은 여섯째를 끌어내었다. 그는 죽을 때가 되자 이렇게 말하였다. "헛된 생각을 하지 마시오. 우리는 지금 우리 하느님께 죄를 지은 탓으로 고난을 당하고 있소. 그래서 이렇게 엄청난 일들이 벌어진 것이오.

Do not think, then, that you will go unpunished for having dared to fight against God."

▶ 그러나 감히 하느님과 싸우려 한 당신이 벌을 받지 않으리라고는 생각하지 마시오.”

|
Most admirable and worthy of everlasting remembrance was the mother, who saw her seven sons perish in a single day, yet bore it courageously because of her hope in the Lord.

|
▶ 특별히 그 어머니는 오래 기억될 놀라운 사람이었다. 그는 일곱 아들이 단 하루에 죽어 가는 것을 지켜보면서도, 주님께 희망을 두고 있었기 때문에 용감하게 견디어 냈다.

Filled with a noble spirit that stirred her womanly heart with manly courage, she exhorted each of them in the language of their forefathers with these words:

▶ 그는 조상들의 언어로 아들 하나하나를 격려하였다. 고결한 정신으로 가득 찬 그는 여자다운 생각을 남자다운 용기로 북돋우며 그들에게 말하였다.

"I do not know how you came into existence in my womb; it was not I who gave you the breath of life, nor was it I who set in order the elements of which each of you is composed.
|

▶ “너희가 어떻게 내 배 속에 생기게 되었는지 나는 모른다. 너희에게 목숨과 생명을 준 것은 내가 아니며, 너희 몸의 각 부분을 제자리에 붙여 준 것도 내가 아니다.

Therefore, since it is the Creator of the universe who shapes each man's beginning, as he brings about the origin of everything, he, in his mercy, will give you back both breath and life, because you now disregard yourselves for the sake of his law."

▶ 그러므로 사람이 생겨날 때 그를 빚어내시고 만물이 생겨날 때 그것을 마련해 내신 온 세상의 창조주께서, 자비로이 너희에게 목숨과 생명을 다시 주실 것이다. 너희가 지금 그분의 법을 위하여 너희 자신을 하찮게 여겼기 때문이다."

Antiochus, suspecting insult in her words, thought he was being ridiculed. As the youngest brother was still alive, the king appealed to him, not with mere words, but with promises on oath, to make him rich and happy if he would abandon his ancestral customs: he would make him his Friend and entrust him with high office.

▶ 안티오코스는 자기가 무시당하였다고 생각하며, 그 여자의 말투가 자기를 비난하는 것이 아닌가 하고 의심스러워하였다. 막내아들은 아직 살아 있었다. 임금은 그에게 조상들의 관습에서 돌아서기만 하면 부자로 만들어 주고 행복하게 해 주며 벗으로 삼고 관직까지 주겠다고 하면서, 말로 타이를 뿐만 아니라 약속하며 맹세까지 하였다.

When the youth paid no attention to him at all, the king appealed to the mother, urging her to advise her boy to save his life.

▶ 그러나 그 젊은이는 전혀 귀를 기울이지 않았다. 그래서 임금은 그 어머니를 가까이 불러 소년에게 충고하여 목숨을 구하게 하라고 강권하였다.

After he had urged her for a long time, she went through the motions of persuading her son.

▶ 임금이 줄기차게 강권하자 어머니는 아들을 설득해 보겠다고 하였다.

In derision of the cruel tyrant, she leaned over close to her son and said in their native language: "Son, have pity on me, who carried you in my womb for nine months, nursed you for three years, brought you up, educated and supported you to your present age.

▶ 그러나 어머니는 아들에게 몸을 기울이고 그 잔인한 폭군을 비웃으며 조상들의 언어로 이렇게 말하였다. “아들아, 나를 불쌍히 여겨 다오. 나는 아홉 달 동안 너를 배 속에 품고 다녔고 너에게 세 해 동안 젖을 먹였으며, 네가 이 나이에 이르도록 기르고 키우고 보살펴 왔다.

I beg you, child, to look at the heavens and the earth and see all that is in them; then you will know that God did not make them out of existing things; and in the same way the human race came into existence.

▶ 얘야, 너에게 당부한다. 하늘과 땅을 바라보고 그 안에 있는 모든 것을 살펴보아라. 그리고 하느님께서, 이미 있는 것에서 그것들을 만들지 않으셨음을 깨달아라. 사람들이 생겨난 것도 마찬가지다.

|
Do not be afraid of this executioner, but be worthy of your brothers and accept death, so that in the time of mercy I may receive you again with them."

▶ 이 박해자를 두려워하지 말고 형들에게 부끄럽지 않게 죽음을 받아들여라. 그래야 내가 그분의 자비로 네 형들과 함께 너를 다시 맞이하게 될 것이다.”

She had scarcely finished speaking when the youth said: "What are you waiting for? I will not obey the king's command. I obey the command of the law given to our forefathers through Moses.

But you, who have contrived every kind of affliction for the Hebrews, will not escape the hands of God.

We, indeed, are suffering because of our sins.

▶ 우리는 우리의 죄 때문에 고난을 당하고 있소.

|
Though our living Lord treats us harshly for a little while to correct us with chastisements, he will again be reconciled with his servants.

▶ 살아 계신 주님께서는 꾸짖고 가르치시려고 우리에게 잠시 화를 내시지만, 당신의 종들과 다시 화해하실 것이오.

|
But you, wretch, vilest of all men! do not, in your insolence, concern yourself with unfounded hopes, as you raise your hand against the children of Heaven.

You have not yet escaped the judgment of the almighty and all-seeing God.
|

My brothers, after enduring brief pain, have drunk of never-failing life, under God's covenant, but you, by the judgment of God, shall receive just punishments for your arrogance.

|
|
▶ 우리 형제들은 잠시 고통을 겪고 나서 하느님의 계약 덕분에 영원한 생명을 누리게 되었소. 그러나 당신은 주님의 심판을 받아 그 교만에 마땅한 벌을 짊어질 것이오.

Like my brothers, I offer up my body and my life for our ancestral laws, imploring God to show mercy soon to our nation, and by afflictions and blows to make you confess that he alone is God.
|

Through me and my brothers, may there be an end to the wrath of the Almighty that has justly fallen on our whole nation."

At that, the king became enraged and treated him even worse than the others, since he bitterly resented the boy's contempt.

▶ 화가 치밀어 오른 임금은 다른 어느 형제보다 그를 더 지독하게 다루었다. 모욕에 찬 그의 말에 격분하였던 것이다.

Thus he too died undefiled, putting all his trust in the Lord.

The mother was last to die, after her sons.
