The Eternal is the judge of all things without exception; the LORD alone is just.

▶ 영원히 살아 계시는 분께서 만물을 함께 창조하셨다.

Whom has he made equal to describing his works, and who can probe his mighty deeds?

▶ 주님 홀로 의로우신 분임이 드러나리라. 그분 같은 존재는 결코 없다.
|

|
Who can measure his majestic power, or exhaust the tale of his mercies?

|
▶ 그분께서는 당신의 손바닥 안에서 세상을 조종하시니 만물이 그분의 뜻을 따른다. 그분께서 당신의 권능으로 만물의 임금이 되시고 만물 안에서 속된 것과 거룩한 것을 갈라놓으시기 때문이다.

One cannot lessen, nor increase, nor penetrate the wonders of the LORD.

▶ 인간이 그 일을 끝냈다고 생각할 때가 바로 시작이고 중도에 그친다 해도 미궁에 빠지기 마련이다.

▶ 이 때문에 주님께서는 사람들에게 인내심을 보이시고 그들에게 당신 자비를 쏟으신다.

Reproving, admonishing, teaching, as a shepherd guides his flock;

▶ 그분께서는 그들의 종말이 얼마나 비참한지를 보고 아시며 그런 까닭에 당신의 용서를 넘치도록 베푸신다.

|
Merciful to those who accept his guidance, who are diligent in his precepts.

|
▶ 인간의 자비는 제 이웃에게 미치지만 주님의 자비는 모든 생명체에 미친다. 그분께서는 그들을 꾸짖고 훈육하고 가르치시며 목자처럼 당신 양 떼를 돌아오게 하신다.

My son, to your charity add no reproach, nor spoil any gift by harsh words.

The Necessity of Prudence

Sometimes the word means more than the gift; both are offered by a kindly man.

▶ 이슬이 불볕더위를 가라앉히지 않느냐? 그처럼 말 한마디가 선물보다 낫다.

Only a fool upbraids before giving; a grudging gift wears out the expectant eyes.

▶ 보라, 말 한마디가 좋은 선물을 능가하지 않느냐? 너그러운 사람에게는 그 두 가지가 다 있다.

Be informed before speaking; before sickness prepare the cure.

▶ 지각 있는 이는 누구나 지혜를 알고 그것을 찾은 이에게 찬사를 보낸다.

▶ 지각 있게 말하는 이들은 스스로 지혜로워지고 적절한 격언들을 쏟아 놓는다. 유일하신 주님께 의지하는 것은 죽은 마음으로 죽은 자에게 매달리는 것보다 낫다.
