The message which came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent him Pashhur, son of Malchiah, and the priest Zephaniah, son of Maaseiah, with this request:

▶ 치드키야 임금이 말키야의 아들 파스후르와 마아세야의 아들 스바니야 사제를 예레미야에게 보냈을 때 주님께서 예레미야에게 내리신 말씀. 그들이 예레미야에게 부탁하였다.

Inquire for us of the LORD, because Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, is attacking us. Perhaps the LORD will deal with us according to all his wonderful works, so that he will withdraw from us.

▶ “바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르가 우리에게 싸움을 걸어오니, 우리를 위해 제발 주님께 문의해 주시오. 행여 주님께서 예전처럼 우리에게 기적을 일으키시어, 네부카드네자르를 우리에게서 물러가게 해 주실지도 모르지 않소?”

But Jeremiah answered them: This is what you shall report to Zedekiah:

▶ 그러자 예레미야가 그들에게 말하였다. “치드키야에게 이렇게 전하시오.
|
|

|
Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: I will turn back in your hands the weapons with which you intend to fight the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who besiege you outside the walls. These weapons I will pile up in the midst of this city,

▶ ‘주 이스라엘의 하느님께서 말씀하십니다. ′이제 너희가 성벽 밖에서 너희를 포위하고 있는 바빌론 임금과 칼데아인들을 공격하려고 손에 든 전쟁 무기를 내가 거두어, 그것들을 이 도성 한복판에 모아 놓겠다.

and I myself will fight against you with outstretched hand and mighty arm, in anger, and wrath, and great rage!

▶ 그리고 분노와 노여움과 무서운 진노 속에서 내가 손을 뻗치고 강한 팔을 휘둘러 너희에게 맞서 싸우겠다.

|
I will strike the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they shall die in a great pestilence.

▶ 내가 이 도성에 사는 것들은 사람이든 짐승이든 모두 치리니, 그들이 무서운 흑사병에 걸려 죽을 것이다.
|

|
After that, says the LORD, I will hand over Zedekiah, king of Judah, and his ministers and the people in this city who survive pestilence, sword, and famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, into the hands of their enemies and those who seek their lives. He shall strike them with the edge of the sword, without quarter, without pity or mercy.

▶ 주님의 말씀이다. 그다음 이 도성에서 흑사병과 칼과 굶주림으로부터 살아남은 자들, 곧 유다 임금 치드키야와 그의 신하들과 백성을 바빌론 임금 네부카드네자르와 그들의 원수들과 그들의 목숨을 노리는 자들의 손에 넘기겠다. 그러면 네부카드네자르는 그들을 칼날로 치고, 그들에게 동정을 베풀거나 그들을 불쌍히도 가엾이도 여기지 않을 것이다.

And to this people you shall say: Thus says the LORD: See, I am giving you a choice between life and death.

▶ 이 백성에게 말하여라. ─ 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. ─ 이제 내가 너희 앞에 생명의 길과 죽음의 길을 놓아둔다.

|
Whoever remains in this city shall die by the sword or famine or pestilence. But whoever leaves and surrenders to the besieging Chaldeans shall live and have his life as booty.

▶ 이 도성에 머무는 자는 칼과 굶주림과 흑사병으로 죽겠지만, 여기서 나가 너희를 포위하고 있는 칼데아인들에게 항복하는 자는 죽지 않고 제 목숨을 전리품으로 얻을 것이다.

|
For I have turned against this city, for its woe and not for its good, says the LORD. It shall be given into the power of the king of Babylon who shall burn it with fire.

|
|
▶ 사실 나는 복이 아니라 재앙을 내리려고 이 도성을 마주 보고 있는 것이다. 주님의 말씀이다. 이 도성은 바빌론 임금의 손에 넘어가고, 그는 이 도성을 불태울 것이다.′’”

To the royal house of Judah: Hear the word of the LORD,

▶ 유다 왕실에 대한 말씀. 주님의 말씀을 들어라.

|
O house of David! Thus says the LORD: Each morning dispense justice, rescue the oppressed from the hand of the oppressor, Lest my fury break out like fire which burns without being quenched, because of the evil of your deeds.

▶ 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. “다윗 집안아, 아침마다 공정한 판결을 내리고 착취당한 자를 압제자의 손에서 구해 주어라. 그러지 않으면 나의 진노가 불처럼 튀어 나가 아무도 끌 수 없게 타오르리라. 이는 너희의 악한 행실 탓이다.

Beware! I am against you, Valley-site, Rock of the Plain, says the LORD. You who say, "Who will attack us, who can penetrate our retreats?"

▶ 골짜기에 사는 자야, 평지에 솟은 바위야 ─ 주님의 말씀이다. ─ 너희는 ‘누가 우리를 치러 내려오고 우리 거처까지 쳐들어오겠느냐?’ 하지만 이제 내가 너희에게 맞서겠다.

|
I will punish you, says the LORD, as your deeds deserve! I will kindle a fire in its forest that shall devour all its surroundings.
