About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them.

▶ 그즈음 헤로데 임금이 교회에 속한 몇몇 사람을 해치려고 손을 뻗쳤다.

He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword,

▶ 그는 먼저 요한의 형 야고보를 칼로 쳐 죽이게 하고서,

|

|
and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also. It was the feast of Unleavened Bread.

▶ 유다인들이 그 일로 좋아하는 것을 보고 베드로도 잡아들이게 하였다. 때는 무교절 기간이었다.

He had him taken into custody and put in prison under the guard of four squads of four soldiers each. He intended to bring him before the people after Passover.
|

▶ 그는 베드로를 붙잡아 감옥에 가두고 네 명씩 짠 네 개의 경비조에 맡겨 지키게 하였다. 파스카 축제가 끝나면 그를 백성 앞으로 끌어낼 작정이었던 것이다.

Peter thus was being kept in prison, but prayer by the church was fervently being made to God on his behalf.

▶ 그리하여 베드로는 감옥에 갇히고 교회는 그를 위하여 끊임없이 기도하였다.

|
On the very night before Herod was to bring him to trial, Peter, secured by double chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while outside the door guards kept watch on the prison.

▶ 헤로데가 베드로를 끌어내려고 하던 그 전날 밤, 베드로는 두 개의 쇠사슬에 묶인 채 두 군사 사이에서 잠을 자고 있었고, 문 앞에서는 파수병들이 감옥을 지키고 있었다.

Suddenly the angel of the Lord stood by him and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and awakened him, saying, "Get up quickly." The chains fell from his wrists.

|
▶ 그런데 갑자기 주님의 천사가 나타나더니 감방에 빛이 비치는 것이었다. 천사는 베드로의 옆구리를 두드려 깨우면서, “빨리 일어나라.” 하고 말하였다. 그러자 그의 손에서 쇠사슬이 떨어져 나갔다.

The angel said to him, "Put on your belt and your sandals." He did so. Then he said to him, "Put on your cloak and follow me."

▶ 천사가 베드로에게 “허리띠를 매고 신을 신어라.” 하고 이르니 베드로가 그렇게 하였다. 천사가 또 베드로에게 “겉옷을 입고 나를 따라라.” 하고 말하였다.

So he followed him out, not realizing that what was happening through the angel was real; he thought he was seeing a vision.

▶ 베드로는 따라 나가면서도, 천사가 일으키는 그 일이 실제인 줄 모르고 환시를 보는 것이려니 생각하였다.

They passed the first guard, then the second, and came to the iron gate leading out to the city, which opened for them by itself. They emerged and made their way down an alley, and suddenly the angel left him.

▶ 그들이 첫째 초소와 둘째 초소를 지나 성안으로 통하는 쇠문 앞에 다다르자, 문이 앞에서 저절로 열렸다. 그래서 밖으로 나가 어떤 거리를 따라 내려갔는데, 천사가 갑자기 그에게서 사라져 버렸다.

Then Peter recovered his senses and said, "Now I know for certain that the Lord sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people had been expecting."

▶ 그제야 베드로가 정신이 들어 이렇게 말하였다. “이제야 참으로 알았다. 주님께서 당신의 천사를 보내시어 헤로데의 손에서, 유다 백성이 바라던 그 모든 것에서 나를 빼내어 주셨다.”

When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer.

▶ 이러한 사실을 깨달은 베드로는 마르코라고 하는 요한의 어머니 마리아의 집으로 갔다. 거기에는 많은 사람이 모여 기도하고 있었다.

When he knocked on the gateway door, a maid named Rhoda came to answer it.

▶ 베드로가 바깥 문을 두드리자 로데라는 하녀가 누구인지 보려고 문으로 갔다.

|
She was so overjoyed when she recognized Peter's voice that, instead of opening the gate, she ran in and announced that Peter was standing at the gate.
|

|
|
▶ 그 하녀는 베드로의 목소리를 알아듣고 너무 기뻐서, 문을 열어 주지도 않고 안으로 달려가 베드로가 문 앞에 서 있다고 알렸다.

|
They told her, "You are out of your mind," but she insisted that it was so. But they kept saying, "It is his angel."
|

▶ 사람들이 “너 정신 나갔구나.” 하는데도 그 하녀는 사실이라고 우겼다. 그래서 사람들은 “베드로의 천사다.” 하고 말하였다.

But Peter continued to knock, and when they opened it, they saw him and were astounded.
|

▶ 베드로가 줄곧 문을 두드리자 사람들이 문을 열어 그를 보고서는 깜짝 놀랐다.

|
He motioned to them with his hand to be quiet and explained to them how the Lord had led him out of the prison, and said, "Report this to James and the brothers." Then he left and went to another place.

▶ 베드로는 그들에게 조용히 하라고 손짓한 다음, 주님께서 자기를 어떻게 감옥에서 끌어내 주셨는지 이야기하였다. 이어서 “이 일을 야고보와 다른 형제들에게 알려 주십시오.” 하고 이르고서, 그곳을 떠나 다른 곳으로 갔다.

At daybreak there was no small commotion among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.

▶ 날이 밝자 군사들 사이에서는 베드로가 없어진 일로 적지 않은 소동이 일어났다.

Herod, after instituting a search but not finding him, ordered the guards tried and executed. Then he left Judea to spend some time in Caesarea.

▶ 헤로데는 베드로를 찾다가 찾아내지 못하자 파수병들을 문초한 뒤, 처형하라고 명령을 내렸다. 그리고 유다를 떠나 카이사리아로 내려가 그곳에 머물렀다.

He had long been very angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon, who now came to him in a body. After winning over Blastus, the king's chamberlain, they sued for peace because their country was supplied with food from the king's territory.

▶ 헤로데는 티로와 시돈 사람들에게 몹시 화가 나 있었다. 그리하여 그들은 뜻을 모아 헤로데에게 갔다. 그리고 임금의 시종장 블라스토스를 설득하여 화평을 청하였다. 그들의 지방이 임금의 영토에서 양식을 공급받고 있었기 때문이다.

On an appointed day, Herod, attired in royal robes, and seated on the rostrum, addressed them publicly.
|

▶ 정해진 날에 헤로데는 화려한 임금 복장을 하고 연단에 앉아 그들에게 연설을 하였다.

The assembled crowd cried out, "This is the voice of a god, not of a man."
|

▶ 그때에 군중이 “저것은 신의 목소리지 사람의 목소리가 아니다.” 하고 외쳤다.

At once the angel of the Lord struck him down because he did not ascribe the honor to God, and he was eaten by worms and breathed his last.

|
▶ 그러자 즉시 주님의 천사가 헤로데를 내리쳤다. 그가 그 영광을 하느님께 돌리지 않았기 때문이다. 그리하여 그는 벌레들에게 먹혀 숨을 거두었다.

But the word of God continued to spread and grow.

After Barnabas and Saul completed their relief mission, they returned to Jerusalem, taking with them John, who is called Mark.
