When we had taken leave of them we set sail, made a straight run for Cos, and on the next day for Rhodes, and from there to Patara.

Finding a ship crossing to Phoenicia, we went on board and put out to sea.

▶ 그리고 페니키아로 건너가는 배를 만나 그것을 타고 떠났다.

|
We caught sight of Cyprus but passed by it on our left and sailed on toward Syria and put in at Tyre where the ship was to unload cargo.

|
▶ 키프로스가 눈에 들어오자 우리는 그 섬을 왼쪽에 두고 시리아로 항진하여 티로에 닿았다. 그 배가 거기에서 짐을 내리기로 되어 있었던 것이다.

There we sought out the disciples and stayed for a week. They kept telling Paul through the Spirit not to embark for Jerusalem.

▶ 우리는 제자들을 찾아내어 그곳에 이레 동안 머물렀다. 그런데 그들은 성령의 지시를 받아, 예루살렘으로 올라가지 말라고 바오로에게 거듭 이야기하였다.

At the end of our stay we left and resumed our journey. All of them, women and children included, escorted us out of the city, and after kneeling on the beach to pray,

we bade farewell to one another. Then we boarded the ship, and they returned home.

We continued the voyage and came from Tyre to Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and stayed a day with them.

▶ 우리는 티로를 떠나 항해를 마치고 프톨레마이스에 다다랐다. 거기에서 형제들에게 인사하고 그들과 함께 하루를 지냈다.

Arrival at Ptolemais and Caesarea

On the next day we resumed the trip and came to Caesarea, where we went to the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him.

He had four virgin daughters gifted with prophecy.

We had been there several days when a prophet named Agabus came down from Judea.
|

▶ 그런데 우리가 여러 날을 머무르는 동안 유다에서 하가보스라는 예언자가 내려왔다.

|
He came up to us, took Paul's belt, bound his own feet and hands with it, and said, "Thus says the holy Spirit: This is the way the Jews will bind the owner of this belt in Jerusalem, and they will hand him over to the Gentiles."

▶ 그가 우리에게 와서는 바오로의 허리띠를 가지고 자기 발과 손을 결박하고 나서 말하였다. “성령께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. ‘예루살렘에서 유다인들이 이 허리띠의 임자를 이렇게 결박하여 다른 민족들에게 넘길 것이다.’”

When we heard this, we and the local residents begged him not to go up to Jerusalem.

▶ 이 말씀을 듣고 우리는 그곳 사람들과 함께 바오로에게 예루살렘으로 올라가지 말라고 간곡히 권하였다.

Then Paul replied, "What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? I am prepared not only to be bound but even to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus."

▶ 그때에 바오로가 대답하였다. “왜 그렇게 울면서 내 마음을 아프게 합니까? 나는 주 예수님의 이름을 위하여 예루살렘에서 결박될 뿐만 아니라 죽을 각오까지 되어 있습니다.”

Since he would not be dissuaded we let the matter rest, saying, "The Lord's will be done."

▶ 바오로가 단념하지 않자 우리는 포기하고, “주님의 뜻이 이루어지기를 빕니다.” 하고만 말하였다.

After these days we made preparations for our journey, then went up to Jerusalem.

Some of the disciples from Caesarea came along to lead us to the house of Mnason, a Cypriot, a disciple of long standing, with whom we were to stay.

When we reached Jerusalem the brothers welcomed us warmly.

The next day, Paul accompanied us on a visit to James, and all the presbyters were present.

|
He greeted them, then proceeded to tell them in detail what God had accomplished among the Gentiles through his ministry.

▶ 바오로는 그들에게 인사하고 나서, 자기의 직무 수행을 통하여 하느님께서 다른 민족들에게 하신 일들을 낱낱이 이야기하였다.

They praised God when they heard it but said to him, "Brother, you see how many thousands of believers there are from among the Jews, and they are all zealous observers of the law.

They have been informed that you are teaching all the Jews who live among the Gentiles to abandon Moses and that you are telling them not to circumcise their children or to observe their customary practices.

▶ 그런데 당신이 다른 민족들 가운데에서 사는 모든 유다인에게 모세를 배신하라고 가르치면서 자식들에게 할례를 베풀지도 말고 우리 관습을 따르지도 말라고 한다는 이야기를 그들이 들었습니다.

What is to be done? They will surely hear that you have arrived.
|

▶ 그러니 어떻게 하면 좋겠습니까? 그들도 당신이 왔다는 것을 틀림없이 듣게 될 것입니다.

So do what we tell you. We have four men who have taken a vow.
|

▶ 그러니 우리가 말하는 대로 하십시오. 우리 가운데에 서원을 한 사람이 넷 있습니다.

Take these men and purify yourself with them, and pay their expenses that they may have their heads shaved. In this way everyone will know that there is nothing to the reports they have been given about you but that you yourself live in observance of the law.

▶ 그 사람들을 데리고 가서 함께 정결 예식을 거행하고, 그들이 머리를 깎을 수 있도록 그 비용을 대십시오. 그러면 당신에 관한 이야기가 아무것도 아닐 뿐만 아니라 오히려 당신도 율법을 정확히 지키며 산다는 것을 모든 사람이 알게 될 것입니다.

As for the Gentiles who have come to believe, we sent them our decision that they abstain from meat sacrificed to idols, from blood, from the meat of strangled animals, and from unlawful marriage."

▶ 그리고 신자가 된 다른 민족들에 관해서는, 우상에게 바쳤던 제물과 피와 목 졸라 죽인 짐승의 고기와 불륜을 삼가라는 우리의 결정을 이미 편지로 써 보낸 바 있습니다.”

So Paul took the men, and on the next day after purifying himself together with them entered the temple to give notice of the day when the purification would be completed and the offering made for each of them.

When the seven days were nearly completed, the Jews from the province of Asia noticed him in the temple, stirred up the whole crowd, and laid hands on him,

shouting, "Fellow Israelites, help us. This is the man who is teaching everyone everywhere against the people and the law and this place, and what is more, he has even brought Greeks into the temple and defiled this sacred place."

▶ 외쳤다. “이스라엘인 여러분, 우리를 도와주십시오. 이자는 어디에서건 누구에게나 우리 백성과 율법과 이 성전을 거슬러 가르치는 사람입니다. 더군다나 그리스인들까지 성전 안으로 데리고 들어와서 이 거룩한 곳을 부정하게 만들었습니다.”

For they had previously seen Trophimus the Ephesian in the city with him and supposed that Paul had brought him into the temple.

The whole city was in turmoil with people rushing together. They seized Paul and dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the gates were closed.

▶ 그래서 온 도시가 소란해지면서 백성이 몰려들었다. 그들은 바오로를 붙잡아 성전 밖으로 끌어냈다. 그러자 성전 문들이 곧 닫혔다.

While they were trying to kill him, a report reached the cohort commander that all Jerusalem was rioting.
|

|
|
▶ 그들이 바오로를 막 죽이려고 할 때, 온 예루살렘에 소동이 일어났다는 보고가 그곳 부대의 천인대장에게 올라갔다.

|
He immediately took soldiers and centurions and charged down on them. When they saw the commander and the soldiers they stopped beating Paul.

▶ 그는 바로 군사들과 백인대장들을 거느리고 그 사람들에게 달려갔다. 그들은 천인대장과 군사들을 보고 바오로에게 매질하는 것을 멈추었다.

The cohort commander came forward, arrested him, and ordered him to be secured with two chains; he tried to find out who he might be and what he had done.
|

▶ 그러자 천인대장이 다가가 바오로를 붙잡고 쇠사슬 두 개로 그를 결박하라고 명령한 다음, 그가 누구며 무슨 일을 하였는지 물었다.

Some in the mob shouted one thing, others something else; so, since he was unable to ascertain the truth because of the uproar, he ordered Paul to be brought into the compound.

▶ 그런데 군중 속에서 이자들은 이렇게, 저자들은 저렇게 소리를 질러 댔다. 천인대장은 그 소란 때문에 진상을 알아낼 수가 없었으므로, 바오로를 진지 안으로 끌고 가라고 명령하였다.

When he reached the steps, he was carried by the soldiers because of the violence of the mob,

for a crowd of people followed and shouted, "Away with him!"

Just as Paul was about to be taken into the compound, he said to the cohort commander, "May I say something to you?" He replied, "Do you speak Greek?

▶ 그렇게 진지 안으로 끌려 들어가던 순간에 바오로가, “당신에게 말을 좀 해도 되겠소?” 하고 천인대장에게 물었다. 그러자 천인대장이 되물었다. “당신은 그리스 말을 할 줄 아오?

So then you are not the Egyptian who started a revolt some time ago and led the four thousand assassins into the desert?"

Paul answered, "I am a Jew, of Tarsus in Cilicia, a citizen of no mean city; I request you to permit me to speak to the people."

▶ 바오로가 대답하였다. “나는 유다 사람으로, 킬리키아의 저 유명한 도시 타르수스의 시민이오. 청컨대 내가 저 백성에게 이야기할 수 있도록 허락해 주시오.”

When he had given his permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people; and when all was quiet he addressed them in Hebrew.
