|
In the twenty-third year of Joash, son of Ahaziah, king of Judah, Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, began his seventeen-year reign over Israel in Samaria.

▶ 유다 임금 아하즈야의 아들 요아스 제이십삼년에, 예후의 아들 여호아하즈가 이스라엘의 임금이 되어, 사마리아에서 열일곱 해 동안 다스렸다.

He did evil in the LORD'S sight, conducting himself like Jeroboam, son of Nebat, and not renouncing the sin he had caused Israel to commit.

▶ 그는 주님의 눈에 거슬리는 악한 짓을 저지르고, 이스라엘을 죄짓게 한, 느밧의 아들 예로보암의 죄를 따라 걸으며 그 죄에서 돌아서지 않았다.

The LORD was angry with Israel and for a long time left them in the power of Hazael, king of Aram, and of Ben-hadad, son of Hazael.

▶ 그러자 주님의 분노가 이스라엘을 거슬러 타오르게 되었고, 그분께서는 이스라엘을 잇따라 아람 임금 하자엘과 하자엘의 아들 벤 하닷의 손에 넘기셨다.

Then Jehoahaz entreated the LORD, who heard him, since he saw the oppression to which the king of Aram had subjected Israel.
|

|
|
▶ 그런데 여호아하즈가 주님의 호의를 간청하자, 주님께서는 그의 청을 들어 주셨다. 이스라엘이 억압당하는 것을, 아람 임금이 그들을 억압하는 것을 보셨기 때문이다.

So the LORD gave Israel a savior, and the Israelites, freed from the power of Aram, dwelt in their own homes as formerly.

|
▶ 주님께서 이스라엘에 구원자를 보내시어, 그들을 아람인들의 손에서 벗어나게 하시니, 이스라엘 백성은 예전처럼 자기들 천막에서 살게 되었다.

Nevertheless, they did not desist from the sins which the house of Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit, but persisted in them. The sacred pole also remained standing in Samaria.

▶ 그러나 이스라엘 백성은 이스라엘을 죄짓게 한 예로보암 집안의 죄에서 돌아서지 않고, 그 죄를 따라 걸어갔다. 또 사마리아에는 아세라 목상도 그대로 서 있었다.

No soldiers were left to Jehoahaz, except fifty horsemen with ten chariots and ten thousand foot soldiers, since the king of Aram had destroyed them and trampled them like dust.

|
▶ 그리하여 주님께서는 여호아하즈에게 기마병 쉰 명, 병거 열 대, 보병 일만의 병력만 남기셨다. 아람 임금이 그 군대를 짓부수어 타작 때의 먼지처럼 만들어 버렸던 것이다.

Jehoahaz rested with his ancestors and was buried in Samaria. His son Joash succeeded him as king.

|
In the thirty-seventh year of Joash, king of Judah, Jehoash, son of Jehoahaz, began his sixteen-year reign over Israel in Samaria.

Joash rested with his ancestors, and Jeroboam occupied the throne. Joash was buried with the kings of Israel in Samaria.)

When Elisha was suffering from the sickness of which he was to die, King Joash of Israel went down to visit him. "My father, my father!" he exclaimed, weeping over him. "Israel's chariots and horsemen!"

and said, "Open the window toward the east." He opened it. Elisha said, "Shoot," and he shot. The prophet exclaimed, "The LORD'S arrow of victory! The arrow of victory over Aram! You will completely conquer Aram at Aphec."

▶ “동쪽 창문을 여십시오.” 하였다. 임금이 창문을 열자 엘리사가 “쏘십시오.” 하고 말하였다. 임금이 활을 쏘니 엘리사가 말하였다. “주님께서 베푸실 승리의 화살입니다. 아람을 이기실 승리의 화살입니다. 임금님께서는 아펙에서 아람을 쳐서 그들을 전멸시키실 것입니다.”

Then he said to the king of Israel, "Take the arrows," which he did. Elisha said to him, "Strike the ground!" He struck the ground three times and stopped.

▶ 엘리사는 또 임금에게 “화살을 잡으십시오.” 하고 말하였다. 임금이 화살을 잡으니, 엘리사가 이스라엘 임금에게 “땅을 치십시오.” 하였다. 임금은 땅을 세 번 치고 그쳤다.

Angry with him, the man of God said: "You should have struck five or six times; you would have defeated Aram completely. Now, you will defeat Aram only three times."
|

|
▶ 그러자 하느님의 사람이 임금에게 화를 내며 말하였다. “임금님께서 대여섯 번 치셨더라면, 아람을 쳐서 전멸시키셨을 것입니다. 그러나 이제는 아람을 세 번밖에 치실 수 없게 되었습니다.”

Elisha died and was buried. At the time, bands of Moabites used to raid the land each year.

▶ 그러고 나서 엘리사가 죽으니, 사람들이 그를 장사 지냈다. 그 무렵 모압 약탈대가 해마다 이 땅에 쳐들어왔는데,

Once some people were burying a man, when suddenly they spied such a raiding band. So they cast the dead man into the grave of Elisha, and everyone went off. But when the man came in contact with the bones of Elisha, he came back to life and rose to his feet.

|
▶ 한번은 사람들이 주검을 묻으려다가 그 약탈대를 보고는, 주검을 엘리사의 무덤 속에 던지고 가 버렸다. 그런데 그 주검이 엘리사의 뼈에 닿자 다시 살아나서 제 발로 일어섰다.

▶ 아람 임금 하자엘은 여호아하즈가 살아 있는 동안 내내 이스라엘을 억압하였다.

|
But the LORD was merciful with Israel and looked on them with compassion because of his covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He was unwilling to destroy them or to cast them out from his presence.
|

▶ 주님께서는 이스라엘 백성에게 자비를 베푸시고 그들을 가엾이 여기셨다. 아브라함과 이사악과 야곱과 맺으신 당신의 계약을 생각하시어, 당신 백성에게 얼굴을 돌리셨던 것이다. 주님께서는 백성을 멸망시키실 마음이 없으셨기에 아직은 당신 앞에서 쫓아내지 않으셨다.

So when King Hazael of Aram died and his son Ben-hadad succeeded him as king,

|
Joash, son of Jehoahaz, took back from Ben-hadad, son of Hazael, the cities which Hazael had taken in battle from his father Jehoahaz. Joash defeated Ben-hadad three times, and thus recovered the cities of Israel.

▶ 그때에 여호아하즈의 아들 여호아스는 하자엘의 아들 벤 하닷의 손에서 성읍들을 도로 찾았다. 그 성읍들은 하자엘이 전쟁에서 여호아스의 아버지 여호아하즈에게서 빼앗은 것들이었다. 여호아스는 벤 하닷을 세 번 쳐서 이스라엘의 성읍들을 도로 찾았던 것이다.
