Israel is a luxuriant vine whose fruit matches its growth. The more abundant his fruit, the more altars he built; The more productive his land, the more sacred pillars he set up.

▶ 이스라엘은 가지가 무성한 포도나무 열매를 잘 맺는다. 그러나 열매가 많을수록 제단들도 많이 만들고 땅이 좋아질수록 기념 기둥들도 좋게 만들었다.

Their heart is false, now they pay for their guilt; God shall break down their altars and destroy their sacred pillars.

▶ 그들의 마음이 거짓으로 가득하니 이제 죗값을 치러야 한다. 그분께서 그 제단들을 부수시고 그 기념 기둥들을 허물어 버리시리라.

If they would say, "We have no king" - Since they do not fear the LORD, what can the king do for them?

▶ 이제 그들은 말하리라. “우리가 주님을 경외하지 않아서 임금이 없지만 임금이 있다 한들 우리에게 무엇을 해 주리오?”

Nothing but make promises, swear false oaths, and make alliances, While justice grows wild like wormwood in a plowed field!

▶ 그들은 말만 하고 헛맹세로 계약을 맺는다. 그리하여 법이라는 것이 밭고랑의 독초처럼 솟아난다.

The inhabitants of Samaria fear for the calf of Beth-aven; The people mourn for it and its priests wail over it, because the glory has departed from it.

▶ 벳 아웬의 송아지 때문에 사마리아 주민들이 떤다. 정녕 그 송아지 때문에 그 백성이 통곡하고 그 우상을 숭배하던 사제들도 통곡하리라. 그들을 기뻐 뛰게 하였던 그 송아지의 영광이 그곳에서 사라졌기 때문이다.

It too shall be carried to Assyria, as an offering to the great king. Ephraim shall be taken into captivity, Israel be shamed by his schemes.

▶ 그 송아지도 아시리아로 옮겨져 대왕에게 선물로 바쳐지리라. 에프라임은 부끄러운 일을 당하고 이스라엘은 자기의 계획 때문에 부끄럽게 되리라.

The king of Samaria shall disappear, like foam upon the waters.

▶ 사마리아는 망하리라. 그 임금은 물 위에 뜬 나뭇가지 같으리라.

The high places of Aven shall be destroyed, the sin of Israel; thorns and thistles shall overgrow their altars. Then they shall cry out to the mountains, "Cover us!" and to the hills, "Fall upon us!"

▶ 이스라엘의 죄악인 아웬의 산당들은 무너지고 가시덤불과 엉겅퀴가 그 제단들 위까지 올라가리라. 그때에 그들은 산들에게 “우리를 덮쳐 다오!”, 언덕들에게 “우리 위로 무너져 다오!” 하고 말하리라.

Since the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel. There they took their stand; war was not to reach them in Gibeah.

▶ 이스라엘아 너는 기브아 시절부터 죄를 지었다. 거기에서 줄곧 그러하였으니 전쟁이 기브아에서 죄짓는 자들에게 닥치지 않겠느냐?

Against the wanton people I came and I chastised them; I gathered troops against them when I chastised them for their two crimes.

Ephraim was a trained heifer, willing to thresh; I myself laid a yoke upon her fair neck; Ephraim was to be harnessed, Judah was to plow, Jacob was to break his furrows:

▶ 에프라임은 길이 잘 든 암소 타작하기를 좋아하였다. 나는 그 아름다운 목에 멍에를 씌웠다. 나는 에프라임에게 쟁기를 끌게 하리라. 유다는 밭을 갈고 야곱은 써레질하게 하리라.

"Sow for yourselves justice, reap the fruit of piety; Break up for yourselves a new field, for it is time to seek the LORD, till he come and rain down justice upon you."

▶ 너희는 정의를 뿌리고 신의를 거두어들여라. 묵혀 둔 너희 땅을 갈아엎어라. 지금이 주님을 찾을 때다, 그가 와서 너희 위에 정의를 비처럼 내릴 때까지.

But you have cultivated wickedness, reaped perversity, and eaten the fruit of falsehood. Because you have trusted in your chariots, and in your many warriors,

▶ 너희는 악을 갈아서 불의를 거두어들이고 거짓의 열매를 먹었다. 너희가 병거와 수많은 전사들을 믿었기 때문이다.

Turmoil shall break out among your tribes and all your fortresses shall be ravaged As Salman ravaged Beth-arbel in time of war, smashing mothers and their children.

▶ 그러므로 너희 백성 가운데에서 전쟁의 함성이 일고 너희의 요새들이 모두 무너지리라. 전투의 날에 살만이 벳 아르벨을 무너뜨렸듯이 적군이 어미를 자식들 위로 내동댕이치리라.

So shall it be done to you, Bethel, because of your utter wickedness: At dawn the king of Israel shall perish utterly.
